Grand Prix 3.8L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 56,000 miles

Faint clicking noise in the steering when turning (can sorta feel it in the steering wheel too).

Just bought the car today, had the clicking in the steering when I bought it, so not sure how many miles were on the car when it started doing it. I noticed it when I test drove the car, researched before buying, saw there was a recall recently issued. Had there not been a recall, would definitely rate this a 2 - definitely annoying (maybe even 3 since it can cause sudden loss of steering control if ignored for too long and completely fails).

$0 repair (but an inconvenient trip back to the dealership).

Bought the car used with GM's 3mo/3000mi warranty. Luckily the steering started making the clunking within the 3mo warranty period. Took it to the dealer and made them test drive the car with me in the passenger seat. Technician heard the clunking under low speed, light throttle, and left or right hand turns. The lower bearing on the steering shaft was not pressed in fully. They were able to disassemble and press in the bearing. It has been quiet ever since but now the trim panel under the dash squeaks.

The vehicle slowly started having clicking, or binding in the steering. It became so bad that I had taken it in to get fixed based on the aggravation. There seems to be a lot of complaints about this online in other forums too. The Grand Prix's and Bonneville's have similar issues.

previously owned a 2000 Impala, 2003 Impala and now a 2005 Grand Prix. Dealer couldn't find or wasn't aware of this clicking in the steering shaft. After about 20,000 mi. on my GP, the dealer said there was a service bulletin to grease the steering shaft. This solved the problem for about 20000 mi. Now with the car out of warranty, the dealer can only lube the shaft when this happened after another 15 - 18000 mi. I'm told GM will not replace the shaft under any warranty nor has a new design.
