NHTSA — Air Bags Problems

2007 Saturn Aura (Page 2 of 5)

CarComplaints.com Seal Of This Might Hurt

CarComplaints.com Notes: The Saturn Aura was a mid-size car meant to replace the somewhat problematic L-Series. Unfortunately, the Aura brought its own problems: namely cheap brake parts that needed early replacement and a gear shifter that could say it’s in park while the transmission was still engaged.

Brake problems, including uneven wear and warped rotors that cause the car to wobble, are common complaints from 2007 owners. Did GM use metal for its rotors that can’t stand the heat? That’s what some say, and it’s hard to argue when reports show that rotors could start to warp as early as 500 miles off the dealer lot.

Meanwhile, a busted gear shifter cable lead to some unwanted rollaways. That’s because the shifter could say “Park” while the transmission was still in drive, reverse or neutral. A defect investigation into the issue was opened in 2011, eventually leading to a recall of 56,000 vehicles in 2014.

When driving with a front seat passenger the "service airbag" warning comes on and in the middle display on top of the dash board it says, "passenger airbag off." When I clear the message using the clear button on my steering wheel it will then say, "passenger airbag on." This happens several times each time I drive with a passenger in the front seat. It has been happening for several months. I took it to the dealer and after 10+ hrs of diagnostics, test driving, etc. They say I need a new passenger seat airbag module and sensor....at a cost of just more than $1,000. They have had several 2007 Saturn Aura's come in with the same issue. At this point they say it is not covered by GM as a warranty issue. I think it should be. Apparently if I get in a wreck while the sensor says there is no one in the front seat when there in fact is, the airbag will not work....and my passenger is looking at the potential of serious injury or death. If this is not a safety issue with this GM car, I don't know what is.

When I drive the car with a front seat passenger the light on the dash keeps flashing from airbag on to airbag off, this happens with any weight passenger. I took the car to my local Chevy dealer and they could not find a code or replicate the problem after charging me fifty dollars to check it. They said it may be a seat suppression module that would cost $925.06 and is not covered by warranty.

Remote start failed to turn over engine only signaled headlights to flash. Upon starting car with key in ignition the service engine illuminated and has not turned off to this day. Was able to bring into local Chevrolet service dept for recall 13036 for brake lamp malfunction and have diagnostic on service engine light on May 6th 2015. Dealer states current code of P0017 and history codes P2070 and P0019. Dealer claims cause is a stretched timing chain and worn guides and wants an engine tear down to replace timing chain, guides, covers and examine camshaft timing. Estimated cost is $3271 and 2-3 days to repair. Current mileage is 100,877 and manufacturer is refusing to cover any part of the repair. I have been researching this repair and seen complaint after complaint in regards to this engines timing chain failing. Complaints range over a series of makes, models, and engines and appears to be a known issue on General Motors part for years and there has been no recalls or corrective actions. I also have an issue with the passenger air bag sensor intermittently turning off the passenger air bag while an adult is sitting in the seat. I was informed by the dealer that this is caused by a failing sensor inside the passenger seat.the seat would need to be removed and disassembled to replace the sensor an appx $800 repair. Again another common complaint and repair the manufacturer is refusing to cover. My car is regularly maintained with records available. I can not afford to pay $4000 in repairs that should not need to be repaired at consumers cost. These serious conditions need to be addressed by General Motors and possible recalls issued. It's sad that the manufacturer dumps their consumers once they cease production of a brand or model. Please investigate and advise us unfortunate owners.

The passenger seat airbag light indicating that it is off comes on whenever the vehicle is started, regardless of occupancy in the passenger seat. Also, the 'air bag problem' indication, along with a warning 'beep' comes on at the same time, on the dash display unit. This can be removed by pressing the proper button on the steering wheel, allowing the odometer to be seen. To my knowledge, you have not asked for a recall, and I see no tsb's about this apparently widespread problem in 2007 Saturn Auras. Ours has heated seats, which, I understand will make the repair more difficult and expensive. This is another example of GM's inappropriate means of cutting costs in safety related areas, such as the ignition switch troubles incurred on the 2005 ion.

Passenger air bag turned off while driving. The dash light comes on indicating the air bag is off. Happened most times we drove the car and at any speed. Occasionally the service air bag warning light would also come on indicating both front air bags weren't working. I took the car to our dealer and was told this was a very dangerous situation and need to replace the passenger seat air bag sensor for approximately $1200. Also was told there is no safety recall for this which I find is incredible. We had the work done and hope GM will perform a recall before someone is injured or killed.

Vehicles airbag warning lights turn on intermittently. Stating one or both are not functioning. This warning message shows for the passenger airbag warning signal whether there is a passenger in the seat also when it is empty. Warning light for drivers seat will turn off and reset back to "normal" or it's working I assume only when I stop the car put in park and shut the engine off and startup again. This is unnerving, not really sure whether I truly have functioning airbags even after completing this ridiculous process. Oct. 24,2014 I took the vehicle in for the latest recall 13036 body control module which was completed. While at Chevy dealership I had the service department check the airbag malfunction. The diagnosis was the only way to fix the problem would be to replace the passenger pressence system B0081 sym 71. B0081 sym 3A total cost to me $820. !!! my Aura is in excellent condition with 31,597 miles as of October 24,2014. However, I have no other choice for transportation at this time, so I hope and pray the airbags will function correctly should I need them. I feel this is a definite safety issue for General Motors. Please issue this recallto cover all costs before someone is hurt!

My passenger air bag light came on. When I took it to the dealership they indicated it was a bad bag that looked like it had been used. The car has never been in any kind of wreck. I bought it from a dealership with 28,000 miles and a carfax indicated one owner and no wrecks. I noticed on GM recall list several passenger air bags are being recalled. My dealership wants $700 to replace and I feel it should be fixed by GM for putting a faulty air bag in the car.
