We have a 2002 Toyota Camry that stinks like "rotten eggs!" We took it in for repair and the dealer told us it was the catalytic converter and supposedly fixed the problem, and that we shouldn't smell it anymore. WE DID! It is AWFUL!!!
We took it in again only to find that they only replaced ONE of TWO converters on the car. Then we were told that they COULD NOT replace the other one that so many complaints were coming in about this problem, that Toyota has now issued a statement (we were given a copy dated Feb 2003) that anyone who experiences the "stink" would have to change brands of gas!! My husband nearly smacked the guy as he is a real caretaker of his vehicles! By the way, this is the 3rd problem with this vehicle and we are more than ready to go public about Toyota's reliability on its new vehicles!
I am not proud of this vehicle and will fight Toyota as long as it takes to get my money or satisfaction!!
We have partnered with JustAnswer to offer online auto repair help and advice from expert professional automotive technicians. You describe your exhaust system problem or ask your question and they try to help you figure it out. The fee is typically $9 to $15, but you can offer to pay more for really tough questions. You will usually receive an answer in 10 minutes or less, and you do not have to pay anything unless you accept the answer.

In the 21/2 years we have owned this vehicle, we have had the strut cushion, (1)catalytic converter, front brakes, and the oxygen sensor replaced. And most recently a noise in the steering wheel similar to low power steering fluid (but not needed) and a clicking sound in engine when sitting idle. Toyota refuses to acknowledge that this vehicle(still under warranty) is a lemon! Regarding the rotten egg scent, they are NOT willing to replace the other converter since they issued a statement in February, 2003 saying they wouldn't replace converters due to type of gas used by customers causing this awful scent (according to them!) and that we would have to live with it! Our vehicle was purchased prior to Toyota issuing this statement with "bumper to bumper" warranty! My husband paid for this vehicle out of our retirement monies, and has lost all confidence in Toyota and it's customer service. We are going to proceed to go public with this problem. Beware of Toyota and check out reputable manufactures first!
