CarComplaints.com Notes: How can we give the 2006 Camry our "Seal of Awesome" when the NHTSA data shows engine problems in the triple digits & multiple deaths/injuries/crashes etc?

The problem with NHTSA data for the 2006 Camry is that for months on end, the news media repeatedly told the public that several Toyota models had an unintended acceleration defect, & to go to safercar.gov (the NHTSA's website) to file a complaint.

So, the NHTSA received a disproportionate number of complaints about Toyota unintended acceleration issues because of the national news media attention, to the point where their data is unreliable taken in context with any other vehicle that did not receive national news attention.

In other words, it's our opinion that the 2 deaths & other injuries/fires/crashes reported to the NHTSA are significant, but (unfortunately) not out of the ordinary for any vehicle, once you factor in the effects of the extended national media coverage of Camry unintended acceleration issues.

CarComplaints.com typically receives more complaints per day about vehicles than the NHTSA does, but the news media did not repeatedly say "go to CarComplaints.com to report your Camry acceleration problems" like they did about the NHTSA -- so although we have less complaint data than the NHTSA for the 2006 Camry, our data for the Camry is a far more statistically accurate representation of the Camry's reliability than what the NHTSA data shows.

I was driving in East granby near a fedex delivery truck. This truck kept swerving lanes in order to get around other cars, but he did so by cutting me off multiple times. He would go to change lanes then swerve back in the original lane, causing me and other cars to need to slam brakes to stay safe. This was also in a school zone in East granby near the center about 3 miles from the bradley airport in ct. The driver kept laughing and smiling at myself and other cars and once I was able to get around him to pass and move on he flipped me off. Delivery drivers should be practicing safe driving especially in a school zone...

Sudden high acceleration of 2006 Camry followed by accident. Car was in park idling while paying for car wash. This happened in a parking lot. When put into drive from stationary position witnesses heard the engine suddenly rev at a high rate. The driver thought the accelerator pedal was stuck. The Camry then rocketed across a service road at 40 mph according to police report. The car hit a light pole with the right front wheel as it went up the embankment of an adjacent parking lot. The Camry went air born and while in the air hit the side of an escalade, flipped in the air and landed on the roof and a Hyundai.

I had my foot on brake and was putting into reverse to back into a parking space when suddenly it lurched forward and hit an escalade that was parked about one foot in front of me. It totaled my car and her car. It was so sudden I don't know if it went into reverse or not. I believe the only thing that stopped me was the impact with SUV. This was reported to Toyota, I am waiting for an inspection of vechicle.

My 2006 automatic Camry shift lever will disengage while driving. I have hit the shift lever while driving at high speed (65 mph) by accident and the lever went from drive to neutral. My engine revs were alarming. Worried about blowing my engine. I quickly put my car back into drive (D) and continued. This has happened several times. I was concerned that my car would slow down and I would be rear ended. With the tailgating trend of today's drivers this is a grave concern to me. Has there been any other complaints ? I feel that the lock to change from park to drive should work in all positions so this event will not accure. I feel that this is an accident waiting to happen. This defect should be addressed.
