CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2009 Camry used to be adorned with our “Seal of Pretty Good” but that was before an alarming number of complaints started rolling in for excessive oil consumption.

Owners are being caught off-guard with how quickly their cars are running out of oil. No leaks, no spills, just 1 quart of vanishing oil in as little as 1,200 miles. Toyota maintains this is “normal” for the 2AZ-FE engine, even though they issued a TSB for the problem in August of 2011.

On July 18, 2014 while traveling out of town, I smelled a burning while driving on the interstate. Pull over at the next rest stop to look the car over and I notice the headlight cover had burned. On July 22, 2014, back in town, I took the car to Toyota dealership and was informed that 51 previous bulb melted and discolored headlight housing. Please note that the bulb was replaced at the dealership two months ago. I was also advised that no light is escaping from housing which may cause it to overheat over a period of time and estimate cost to replace housing - $499.75 (includes all labor and taxes). My concern is that this bulb melted and cause a burn on the headlight cover, this is a defect and consumers should not be paying for a defective part that cost almost $500. This requires the complete housing to be replaced and not the cover nor does it repair the problem since this can happen again.

During normal operation of a 2009 Toyota Camry le with 2.4L 4-cylinder engine and 5-speed automatic transmission on the highway traveling approximately 60 mph, the speedometer suddenly dropped to 0 and the ABS and brake lights on the dash board illuminated. The car did not cease normal operation and the brakes appeared to still function and the car was drivable as normal. The speedometer needle did not move and the ABS and brake lights stayed illuminated for several minutes with no noticeable change in braking ability. Then, the speedometer suddenly jumped back to 60 mph and appears to operate properly. At the same time, the ABS and brake lights on the dashboard turned off. There were no noticeable changes in the operation of the car. That the same night, the exact same symptoms returned 2 more times just as they had occurred before with no warning at all. During one episode, the lights illuminated during a complete stop and the speedometer was inactive after leaving the stop. Again, after a few minutes, the speedometer returned to correct operation and the ABS and brake lights on the dash board turned off.

When I was driving at night, I started to feel a lot of heat in my right hand, the heat came from the radio and the A/C controls stop working and the radio too, the radio turn blank but keep playing the A/C controls keep turning on and off by them selves. Since then my radio goes blank, on and off and the dealer wont do nothing about it, I have check with different Camry's owners and I have found out that they have the same problem. I also have problems with my brakes"??" when I step on the brakes my steering wheel starts shaking like if the rotors were bad, I took the car to my mechanic only to find out that a idle arm is bad, and he as well as other Camry's owners tell me that there are a lot problems with those arms. My car is stock, I haven't done any modifications. The other problem that I have is that I took the car for new tires and I saw rust inside all my rims, I live in California so there no snow or I do not live to close to the beach, and I do not know what to do, I told the dealer and they say nothing they can do. My visors keep falling off and they come of their base.

While driving, the speed, RPM and temperature needles dropped to zero, the brake and ABS lights came on and the A/C compressor stopped working while the car was traveling @ 75 mph... the rest of the systems were working normally... after about 2-3 minutes, the above mentioned systems starting working properly again with no lingering effects on the car... but after about 5-10 minutes it happened again... and the problem started to happen in a cycle as frequently as 5 minutes but as long as 30 minutes... this will also happen while in park. The dealer replaced the PCM and still has a problem they have not been able to diagnose the problem after a week trying... any ideas? it is driving us crazy!

Parked car in driveway two hours later my neighbor told me my lights were on. Light switch was off could not get lights to go off. Called tow truck they could not get lights to turn off, so they pulled the fuses for the lights. Three hours later the horn started blowing, ,had to disconnect to get it to stop. Took into Toyota dealer where I bought it, a year ago. They said they thought it was a after market alarm system that was installed previously to my ownership. They disconnected it, three weeks later same thing started happening, except this time the high beam headlights would not turn off. Take it back to Toyota and now they say it is an internal electrical problem that may cause other problems if not fixed. Around $825.

A dashboard light came on in my Toyota Camry, indicating a problem with the airbags or seatbelts (the SRS warning light). The service person at the Toyota dealer told me the cause of the warning light was a spiral cable in the steering column. The repair cost me $499.94. A cable does not have moving parts like a brake assembly. In my opinion, a cable should not fail. I learned that Toyota issued a recall of Tacoma trucks because of the spiral cable. See the two sections below from a 3-8-12 news release. pressroom.Toyota.com/releases/customer+faqs+Toyota+Tacoma+steering+wheel+spiral+cable+assembly+recall.htm 2. what is the condition" due to the combination of the steering wheel spiral cable design and characteristics unique to the Tacoma chassis, friction between the spiral cable and the retainer in the steering wheel spiral cable assembly may occur in some vehicles. Friction over time may result in damage to certain circuits that provide connectivity to the drivers air bag module. If connectivity is lost, the air bag warning lamp will remain illuminated, and the drivers air bag may become deactivated, preventing deployment in the event of a crash. 3. are there any warnings that this condition has occurred" yes. The airbag warning light is designed to illuminate when the vehicle is started. It goes off after about 6 seconds, indicating the system is operating as designed. If the airbag warning light remains illuminated after this period, please contact your local Toyota dealer for diagnosis and appropriate repair. I suspect the problem with the Tacoma truck is also a problem with the Camry. Owners should not be required to pay the cost of repairing a part that failed because of a design flaw. Furthermore, there is a safety issue because, in the event of a collision, the failure of the steering wheel airbag puts the driver in danger.

My 2009 Toyota Camry had a window switch failure. On the main switch assembly, the switch button that controls the passenger's windows partially melted due to an apparent short. This could potentially have resulted in a fire, hence this report. Please add this complaint in your current investigation about this specific manufacturing defect and will appreciate any updates on this investigation.

All of a sudden my car lost all electrical power. I could not open the door of the car using the remote and everything electrical in the car is dead. It does not start, no power windows, cd player, nothing works. I wasn't on the road when this happened but I cant imagine what would have happened if I were driving. This is the most dangerous I could have ever imagined myself in but luckily my car was parked.

I have a 2009 Camry. Since my gas gauge was continuously reading empty I took it to dealer. The dealer indicate the vehicle was in warranty until March 2012 but that because water droplet were found in the tank the 'sender' had burned out and was not sending the correct gas level to the dashes gauge and that it was not covered by the warranty. I understand the sender should have had some tolerance to some level of liquid humidity and should not have failed. This failure of sender should have been covered by the warranty. They indicated that many pumps had gone bad by water being deposited in tanks of their vehicles but they had no history of replacing senders. The pump works fine and the car runs great, but the gauge in the dash was the only problem. Should it have been repaired under warranty?

I purchased my 2009 Toyota Camry in Jun 2009(used) with about 6000 miles. After the first week the clip from the carpet snapped out, and I took it to Toyota for the first carpet recall, then I took it to Toyota for the sudden acceleration recall with the gas pedal, this Friday I am returning it, for the sudden acceleration due to some electrical issue that Toyota is unsure of. I've been paying car notes and have not been able to try my car, for fear of sudden acceleration not due to myself.
