Toyota has to be one of the most arrogant car companies on the face of this planet. We had the identical Inverter Water Pump failure in our 2004 Prius with only 40,000 miles on it! We paid the crooks at Fletcher Jones Toyota nearly $500.00 to replace that cheap, little 2 bolt plastic inverter pump. We had become aware that we were not alone with this problem! Subsequently we came across a Toyota Technical Service Bulletin EG001-07 that CLEARLY outlined a very well, known to Toyota, problem with this pump and a brand new model pump replacement. A complaint we filed with the BBB got us a "goodwill reimbursement" of about half of the actual repair cost direct from Toyota. The interesting end to this 1st encounter was the eventual Toyota TOTAL recall and replacement of this defective pump! The balance of the repair was paid back to us by Toyota, and we thankfully put this behind us, that is, until we got a 2008 Prius. On July 30, 2012, our 08 Prius with 66k miles had the exact same Inverter Pump failure! This time we shelled out $407.76 for the identical pump replacement. Toyota had issued a recall only for the 04 - 06 models, even though all Prius models had the same Inverter pump through 2009! We went through the BBB complaints again, and Toyota, once again, issued to us another "goodwill reimbursement" of $200.00. I asked for, and got, both times, the old defective pumps, and both replacements were IDENTICAL! It seems that Toyota does absolutely nothing about vehicle defects unless they're forced to. Less popular and more inexpensive vehicles such as cars from Hyundai, come with 10 year 100k mile bumper to bumper coverage! Toyota does you a big favor with their 3 years or 36k coverage. How pathetic.....
