Tundra Limited 5.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 150,200 miles

Heard a small engine internal engine noise since I bought the truck with a hundred thousand miles. Used synthetic oil and do not abuse the vehicle. Gave no signs of a problem and suddenly snap rod at about 30 mph. I though maybe the timing chain had problems at first then found hole on block next to starter. Used engine is costing $5500. I not buying another 2007 model.

Tundra Limited 5.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 74,000 miles

Just purchased a clean one owner used '07 Tundra, my first Toyota. The "piston slap" issue is well documented on many sites, including Toyotanation.com, Tundranation, etc. There are more posts and threads than one person can read in a lifetime. I came out of an '01 Silverado with the LS platform engine, and it was still running flawlessly with 232,000 miles. It too had piston skirt knock when cold. Several of the same type trucks in our company fleet have done it since new. My son's '06 Lexus IS250 had the exact same problem when cold. GM seems to have gotten a handle on their problem. The new stuff is pretty quiet.

For being a supposed, "Quality leader", Toyata sure likes to dupe their customers with a lot of bullshit at the dealer level about those engine noises being "normal". If I wanted to listen to that much engine noise, I'd drive an old Ford PowerStroke, or better yet, an early muscsle car with Forged Pistons, because that's exactly what it sounds like. If it didn't have 380HP and a decent interior, there'd be a big FOR SALE sign in it tomorrow. Really too bad you can't buy anything worth a damn anymore, no matter how much you spend. This deserves a class action lawsuit from what I've read so far.

Tundra SR5 5.7L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 32,000 miles

I just bought a 07 with 30,000 miles on it last week. The next day I heard the knock as I was pulling out of my driveway. It lasted the whole 2 hour drive to work. The knock is there at about 2000 to 3000 RPM. It sounds identical to a spun bearing I had with my Mustang. I immediately got online and found all of these posts about the knock and piston slap issues. The next day I took the truck back to the dealer and told them I wanted nothing to do with a truck that sounded like this. They told me not to worry that the service department would take care of it. A week later they had their master tech look at it and he told me that the sound was normal.

I have family and friends that drive Rams and Siverados and it's kind of embarrassing when they hear that noise and ask me what's up with it. I was a tech for years and piston slap was never something anyone I knew in the field would consider normal.

I called Toyota in CA and was assigned a case manager. The case manager called the dealer and was told by the dealer it was nothing to worry about. The case manager offered no assistance and according to her was not aware of any issue with the 5.7L. They basically said I was stuck with the truck and would have to put up with the noise.

Tundra SR5 5.7L

  • Automatic transmission

The engine has had noise from the day it was purchased. I thought it was the injectors or the exhaust. It still runs fine, but sometimes it sounds like a diesel.

Tundra 5.7L V8

  • Manual transmission
  • 10,000 miles

My 2007 Tundra 5.7 V8 started knocking when cold at 10,000miles. I now have 25,000 miles and its getting louder. The knocking has been diagnosed as piston slap.

The dealer, Maita Toyota says the knocking is acceptable for this motor.

What can I do about this noise.
