I've had to have my brakes replaced every 20,000 miles. VW claims this is normal wear and tear even though most of my miles are freeway.

Jetta TDI 1.9

Brake pads wore out very quickly. Had to replace the set of rear rotors, pads, and right rear caliper at only 48,000 miles! It seems like an awfully short time for brake problems on a new vehicle, and of course none of it is covered under our warranty. I have since learned that Volkswagen makes unusually thin rotors and it is hard to catch brake problems in time to salvage them, thus you usually end up having to replace them as soon as you realize your brake pads are worn. We let the problem go too long and ended up having a brake pad fall off. Oops! We ran into a lot of trouble getting the tools necessary to get various nuts and bolts off in order to replace the parts. We have become very friendly with the Snap-on guy! To be fair, though, the car has been virtually trouble-free besides this and gets great mileage.
