Jetta TDI 2.0L 4 cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 111,000 miles

I bought this car brand new, was religiously serviced by the dealership at the recommended intervals. The only things that I didn't have done at the dealership were new tires and a state inspection. One day while driving to work, went across a railroad crossing and the oil pressure light came on. I had just had the car serviced along with a new timing belt, water pump and serpentine belt just 1k miles before this, at the recommended 110k mile mark. I thought maybe a wire was loose somewhere in result of having the work done to it, and the bumpy ride made the light come on. Light went off at an idle, didn't even drive it a mile till I was at work. No strange noises, no smoke, still had power. To be safe, I got a ride home, drove my truck and trailer the next day and hauled it straight to the dealership.

They called me back the next day and asked me again what was wrong with the car, they couldn't find anything wrong with it, checked oil pressure and it was fine. Told them again what happened. Got a call a few days later saying that they found the problem, it definitely needed a turbo, oil was pushing past seal at higher rpm, causing low oil pressure warning, but was fine at idle. Said they checked oil pan and found metal shavings, recommended the engine and turbo be replaced, total on the parts only came to $8300! I bought this car thinking the engine would outlast the rest of the car, easily going 300k+ miles, I was wrong.

Never again will I own another Volkswagen. I'll be glad when it moves on to it's new owner this weekend.

Jetta Tdi

  • Automatic transmission
  • 85,000 miles

At 85,000 miles the Turbo failed, and stopped working. Had to replace the turbo in the engine, and took weeks to repair, as well as high dollar cost.

Sunrise V.W. had my 2009 Jetta TDI in their shop yesterday, and after diagnostics informed me that I needed both cooling fans, and the intake manifold replaced. I have Geico Mechanical Break Down insurance. The adjuster only approved the replacement of the cooling fans. On the way home my check engine light came on, I heard a pop sound from the engine, and lost all of the cars power. I believe the Intake Manifold failed, and caused the loss of engine power. The car was then towed back to Sunrise V.W.

Update from Jun 19, 2014: Ten day after I left my vehicle at Sunrise V.W. it was ready to by picked up. The vehicle had a new intake manifold installed.

For four or five days it would stall on cold start; restart and it ran fine. Finally it failed completely; all dash lights came on, wouldn't shift into gear.

Jetta 2.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 20,132 miles

I was driving this piece of crap when all the sudden my gas gage went from 3/4 to empty, the cab filled with smoke, thick smoke coming from tailpipe, it began to jerk and sputter then died. When I tried to restart it, all i did was put the key in ignition and turned quickly. The car continued to try and start for 10 seconds (yes i timed it) without me even turning the key. Not only did it not start, but the smoke was thick and awful.

Oh, and the stupid engine light did not come on the entire time. None of the warning lights came on. I still owe 23,000 on this car. Bought it brand new with only 16 miles on it. I DONT WANT IT ANYMORE, but VW will not let me out of my lease.
