Jetta TDI 2.0L Tdi

  • Automatic transmission
  • 140,000 miles

So, like many others are finding out, the 2009 VW TDI's generally have problems with the emission control part of their exhaust systems. At 140k miles, I took my car in to get an oil change and to have them look at a CEL. Turns out the problem is a cracked Diesel Particulate Filter, which they can fix for the absurd sum of $6000. Thanks to the whole dieselgate thing going on, the car is barely worth $6k.

Basically, the 2009's are in the worst shape for this problem from what I can gather. The DPF portion of the exhaust on the 09's is a 1 piece unit that comes with a replace cost of around $6k. Not sure it make sense to spend the money to fix, with the other high cost items that seem to go bad on these cars, HP Fuel Pump, DSG Trans, etc.

So I'm left with a car that's in decent shape, that just isn't economically viable to fix. For now, I just drive it with the CEL on, waiting for dieselgate and VW to hopefully buy this thing back.

Yikes--yellow engine light went on and was diagnosed as a P0401 exhaust gas recirculation problem--cracked and leaking DPF allowing soot to pass into EGR filter, clogging it; basically whole pollution control system needs to be replaced for a whipping $6,100. Are you kidding me? Is this part of the whole "not so clean diesel" scam that has just emerged? This is the equivalent of having a cavity and beig told that you need a jaw transplant.

Jetta TDI 2.0L

My 2009 TDI had the Engine and DPF light come on, I heard some kind of hissing sound as the car accelerated. I brought it to the dealer and scanned codes. Dealer found that my battery leaked and acid caused the lower boost tube and DPF to fail. Dealer recommended to replace battery, boost tube, DPF, EGR filter, and alignment. It is going to cost over $6000 for repairs. I declined the repair and drove away in my car. Complained to VWOA just for the record only no help, as expected. The BS is that they do not want to cover under emission warranty and Dealer claimed that my battery is not the genuine battery (no idea why they say that) and the battery is the cause to the problem. It is considered an outside influence so no warranty will be honored. To me as a consumer, they are trying to make whatever excuses they can to dishonor the warranty. I will not buy VW again for their unreliable products that's for sure. I know every car has its own problems, but VW TDI has so many time bombs and costly repairs that is not what any normal consumer would like to see. And for a 5 year old car, I certainly did not expect to see a major repair this soon.

Jetta TDI 2.0

  • Automatic transmission
  • 89,000 miles

My TDI went 8000 miles over Diesel Particle Filter warranty limit and VW wants me to cover the cost for fixing it. It is a known problem about the TDI DPF, specifically the 09 model whereas the emission standard must be met by the state standard. The cost to change the DPF varied from VW dealers, for example, Union VW dealer asked 4800.00 dollars to fixed the problems while Linden VW wanted $7800.00 and Douglass VW wanted $5400.00. Presently, the car has 107000 miles and for bearing a huge cost for this vehicle that is not realistic on my part.

VW recommends the DPF needs to be changed at 120000 miles and as I stated earlier the price for a DPF is way too much which is part of a regular maintenance. Besides changing oil, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter, brakes and tires that are considered routine maintenance.... and Diesel Particle Filter should be consider as same as routine maintenance.
