I had recently had the oil changed in April 2020. it seemed to be fine, no issues. I was aware of the seal on the oil pan (I think) was leaking oil and had made an appointment at a local repair shop to be looked at. I was gong to the grocery store and afterwards came out and it started up okay but, when I put it in drive, it started to hesitate and skip but, when it got going that stopped and it ran ok but, continued to do the same as I was driving around, I stopped to check the oil and it was down a quart then added more oil to it. before I could make it home or to the repair shop, it started to stall and finally died and needed to call for a tow to bring to repair shop who could not fix it as it had many codes that came up when they diagnosed it. It was finally towed to the volkswagon dealer to find the problem. I was told that I needed a new engine and it would cost approx. 10,000 dollars to replace. I don't believe that could happen with just oil leak and oil was replaced. they said something about the pistons being melted or warped which seized the engine(not sure). I think that it was also on a recall for something like that but, the dealer told me it wasn't . I am not sure how to proceed now. The dealer still has it and I need help with what to do with it . I think that the dealer just thought it was too old and that they didn't want to spend the time or money with fixing it which most likely was something volkswagon knew it was a problem and don't want to spend the money to fix.

Engine light came on. Took it to dealer for diagnosis. Was told the engine is leaking oil from rear main seal. Will continue to leak unless repaired. Repair estimate $1,500!!! Was told this is common problem in older Tiguans with this amount of mileage.

Was told by dealership all of the problems with car are not worth fixing, get rid of car. Would never buy another Volkswagen. Not only that they charged 133$ just to tell me what was wrong. Volkswagen used to be about quality, now it's just about the almighty dollar.

ALL THE MONEY PUT INTO THIS VEHICLE IN UNDER A 100,000 MIKES SEEMS A LITTLE MUCH TO ME. MOSTLY BECAUSE IT IS A VW! ALL MAJOR ENGINE PROBLEMS!! AND IT STILL AIN'T RIGHT AND I HAVE YET TO HEAR BACK FROM ANYONE. AS OF NOW THE ENGINE LIGHT HAS COME ON AGAIN AND ITS ONLY BEEN LESS THAN A MONTH SINCE IT WAS FIXED LAST!!! I BOUGHT THIS CAR TO NOT HAVE THESE PROBLEMS, WORSE THAN ANY DOMESTIC IV EVER OWNED.

The car consumes a large amount of oil. This started with the mileage between 46,500 and 47,000. Then the car died on the side of the road. Took it to a dealer who did a fuel injector recall again?? The dealer states that the seal is bad and there are two other issues that need repairing. I took the car to an independent (very reliable shop) who tells me that the piston rings are shot and the engine needs to be replaced. They didn't recommend any repair due to cost and age of vehicle?

How could a vehicle with 47,000 miles have an engine that need to be replaced or rebuilt?? Why would a dealer give me a list of repairs that does not include piston rings? Would they do these repairs and later tell me that the car needs additional work that they discovered and then I would be forced to complete a larger repair??

Sounds like a scam. what do yo think?? VW is trying wash their hands of this issue because of the age of the vehicle.

10 weeks out of warranty our nightmare started. After a one hour highway drive to my parent's house with two small children I discovered a significant oil leak in their driveway as I was leaving. We immediately checked the oil and found it was bone dry! This was a $2,600 repair, but VW covered the 11 hours of labor to replace the rear main seal. I had to cover the parts which totaled $400.

After reading about other people's trouble, and speaking to other knowledgeable mechanics, I asked the dealer to also check the PCV Valve, which turned out to be bad and was the likely cause of the Rear Main Seal failure. Had I not done my homework I am very confident the dealer would not have replaced the valve. Unfortunately I think significant damage was done to my engine during this ordeal. This was only the beginning of our nightmare.....

This car has been nothing but problems and now this major one. Saw oil leaks marks on driveway and took it to the dealer right away. They informed us that is was the rear main oil seal leaking from the engine. Almost ran out of oil. The transmission has to be removed to replace the seal thus the cost will be in the $ 1,200.00 range. The car has always been well maintained and serviced. Did some research and this seems to be a common problem.
