Ford Recalls Vehicles for Steering and Windshield Problems
Windshields with bubbles and loss of steering control cause two Ford recalls.

— Ford is recalling almost 5,000 vans and SUVs because of windshield and steering problems.

It's Like Looking Through Bubble Wrap!

The majority of the vehicles include 4,500 model year 2011 Ford E-150, E-250, E-350, and E-450 trucks. Ford says these vans have windshields that can form bubbles in hot temperatures and impair vision.  Ford says the problem occurred during manufacturing between May 12, 2011, through May 26, 2011.

The recall will begin about January 27, 2014.  Ford dealers will replace the windshield if bubbles are present.  Owners of the 2011 Ford E-150, E-250, E-350, and E-450 can call Ford at 866-436-7332 and provide them with recall number 11C20.

Look Ma, No Steering!

The second recall is much smaller but the problem is much more dangerous.  About 300 model year 2011-2012 Ford Explorers might have serious steering problems.

Ford says Explorers that had replacement steering gears installed between September, 2013, and January, 2014, might be at risk of total steering failure.  According to Ford, the gears can lock and cause a driver to completely lose the ability to steer the vehicle.

The Explorer recall should begin on January 24, 2014. Ford dealers will replace the affected steering gears with new steering gears. The Ford Explorer recall number is 13S14.  With questions, contact Ford at 800-392-3673.
