Hyundai Elantra Touring Recalled For Dangerous Air Bags
Metal bracket in headliner could detach from side curtain air bag in the Hyundai Elantra Touring.

— Following a government investigation into dangerous air bags, Hyundai is recalling 35,000 model year 2010-2012 Elantra Touring vehicles.

Hyundai had recalled 186,000 Elantra cars in 2013 because a support bracket attached to the headliner could detach during a side curtain air bag deployment. That metal support bracket can cause more harm than the crash itself.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a "recall query" after finding model year 2009-2012 Hyundai Elantra Touring vehicles used a very similar headliner and bracket.

On June 3, 2014, Hyundai and NHTSA performed air bag deployment testing and watched as a headliner support bracket came loose during the test.

The recall should begin sometime in August, 2014. Hyundai dealers will install industrial adhesive strips to the headliner that will hopefully keep the metal bracket in place.

Affected owners of the 2010-2012 Elantra Touring can call Hyundai customer service at 800-633-5151 and give them recall number 117.
