Toyota Recalls Older Vehicles With Airbags That Spontaneously Deploy
Toyota recalls 320,000 older Toyota and Lexus vehicles with curtain airbags that have injured people

— Toyota is recalling 320,000 older Toyota and Lexus vehicles to fix airbag problems. However, the airbag issues aren't related to the millions of vehicles recalled due to airbag manufacturer Takata.

Affected are the following models:

  • 2003-2006 Toyota Land Cruiser
  • 2004-2006 Toyota 4Runner
  • 2005-2006 Toyota Tundra
  • 2005-2006 Toyota Sequoia
  • 2003-2006 Lexus LX 470
  • 2004-2006 Lexus GX 470

Toyota says the vehicles are equipped with curtain shield airbags that deploy from the roof in a crash. The automaker says the airbags can deploy shortly after the vehicle is started, and without need of a crash. In addition, the seat belt pretensioners could activate when the airbags malfunction.

Toyota says minor injuries have occurred from the airbags smacking people when they least expected it.

The recall is expected to begin April 2, 2016. Toyota dealers will replace the airbag control module with one that has improved programming.

Owners of the recalled vehicles can contact Toyota customer service at 888-271-9371 and use recall numbers G0C and GLB.
