Bought a new 2013 BMW 328xi Coupe and about a year later at 17,000 kilometers I started to feel the car shake when applying brakes. Had it looked at locally, and they could see the rotors all rusted and scored so badly they were UNSAFE to use. Called my BMW dealer service manager and told him about the problem, and he quickly told me brakes were not covered as they are a wear part. I told him I only had 17,000 kms on it. And he said too bad!
I knew I had to fix this serious safety problem, especially since I transported my grandchildren in this UNSAFE car. The service mgr said it would cost $900 to replace them, but the new ones were also NOT warranted either!!! I asked him why anyone would replace the faulty brakes with the identical ones that would fail similarly under the same conditions- he said "my choice". I then went to my favorite local repair shop, and they sold me aftermarket rotors and pads all around, for about the same $900, BUT these were guaranteed not to rust and to last 80,000 kms.
I am taking BMW to court in March for two reasons. Beside the $900, I want to know why a company as big as BMW that would sell a car as expensive as this one" $60,000", would not at the least look into what conditions could possibly have occurred to have brakes totally fail in that short of a span and create a serious safety issue??? BMW Germany head office sent me an email stating that I should "dry the pads and rotors off after they get wet"!!!!! Who ever heard of something as absurd as that?? My mechanic said that would be near impossible since the only way would be to take all 4 wheels off to get at the pads and rotors!!!
Anyone else have the same problem?
