Driving on the freeway at 65. Truck started slowing down but RPM's going up. Pulled over to side (no small feat). Tranny fluid at correct level and good color, drive shaft still there. no visible damage underneath or fluid leaking. Got back in truck put it in 4hi and was able to drive it off. Later, was able to put it in 2hi and it drove normal but with "service 4wd" light. I've been having trouble with xfer case since just after the warranty expired. Understand this problem is common on Tahoes and Avalanches also. Hoping for recall.
Update from Nov 9, 2009: Talked to a few dealer service departments on this one. The service manager at Rydell in San Fernando told me that he wouldn't have a transmission guy in on saturday, but that it was probably dirt in one of the valves on my transmission. He said that they would probably just need to change the tranny fluid.
I took it to a different dealer who had a tranny guy in, based on the online research in the various forums, it boiled down to the switch in the dash or the motor/encoder assy on the xfer case. In the end it turned out to be the range selector switch in the motor/encoder assy. The dealer won't sell you the switch kit separately, so the least expensive option was to have it installed for $366. DO YOUR RESEARCH - IF WHAT THEY TELL YOU DOESN'[T SOUND CORRECT, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!!
