CarComplaints.com Notes: The third generation Durango is plagued by a defective TIPM, particularily in the 2011 and 2012 model years.

TIPM, which stands for Totally Integrated Power Modules, is responsible for controlling and distributing power to all the vehicle’s electrical functions. So when your TIPM goes haywire, bad things start happening. Things like your water pump can stop working, your engine can stall out and your airbags can randomly deploy.

Drove to work and started in the morning just fine. As I was leaving work 7 hours later, I could not get the vehicle started to go pick up my children. Tried five times and on the fifth time it started right up. When I attempt to start the car it cranks but never turns over. No shaking this time, but I feared it would not start and my child would be left at school. It is like playing Russian Roulette every time I try to start the car.

Still having issues with the car starting. It took three attempts to get the car started. I am anticipating it eventually not starting at all or stopping in motion. Unsafe vehicle, should not have been on the road. The TIPM needs to be recalled before someone is seriously hurt. Chrysler????

Durango RT 5.7L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 36,005 miles

Took my 15 year old daughter, who is in driving school, out for a drive. The car refused to start for her and it began to shake. Needless to say, I did not let her drive in fear that it could stall as she was driving and she could lose total control resulting in death or injury.

The TIPM is completely defective and the dealership knew it when they sold it to me and they are unwilling to put a fix in place. Very dangerous vehicle and it runs the risk of shutting down in motion or at traffic lights. Unsafe, shame on Chrysler and Dodge.

Parked the car at the golf course and two hours later when I attempted to start the vehicle it refused to start. I tried three times and on the third attempt it turned on. It began to shake really hard side to side once it was on. I turned it off and restarted it and it did not appear to have the same issues.

Durango R/T V6

I am completely disappointed and upset with the way that Chrysler has handled this recall. To have my vehicle stop working a few days before I have to drive out of town in July 2014 and not start again is ridiculous. The Durango shut off on me twice in the middle off driving it with my kids in the car. No warning, nothing just stopped working and wouldn't re-start for another 20 min. Then to find out that it is the TIPM that needs to be replaced and is going to cost me over $1,250 out of pocket because there was no recall out on it yet tops the cake. Let alone I have to wait another 2 weeks before a slot of an appointment time opens up to even attempt to bring it in just makes me more upset.

My Durango had been sitting in my drive way for almost 5 months unable to start before I even got a notice that Chrysler decided to issue a recall on the TIPM and that I now had to wait for the part to come in. I tried calling the customer service number on the recall letter and to no avail they were not much help either. One guy I spoke to named Rob had the nerve to tell me that parts take time to make and it will not happen over night(all I asked was if they had an ETA for the part).

So here we go another 2 months in sitting in my drive way waiting for the part to come in. Finally I got the letter in the mail that it is in and now I find out that the Ingram Park Chrysler dealership does not tow vehicles in that need work or give a courtesy car. Luckily my insurance felt my pain of not having a operational vehicle for a total of 7 months and they towed it to the dealership for me. Now I have to wait another 5 days before they will take a look at it. Lets see how much they charge me now to fix the problems that are because of the vehicle not starting. I can't open the trunk, the seats won't move, the lock/unlock on the doors doesn't work, windows won't roll down. Lets see what else the find and want to up-charge me for.

Durango Heat 3.6L

Durango 2011: I started having issues with failed starts. This is happening every morning, sitting in my car for at least 10 minutes before I go to work, when attempting several times it finally starts! One occasion, the car just turned off when I stopped in the red light!!, Thankfully I was not driving on the highway like I usually do when I go to work. Several occasions the airbag light turn on and off randomly. I took the car to the dealership and they stated : the car has some electric issues and there is a recall for that (starting in October 24th) but I still have to wait for a couple months until they get the parts, it is in back-order!!!

I usually ride this vehicle with my 2 years old son and my mom. Vehicle is very unsafe to drive in meantime for fear of stalling and this is going to hurt my family!

This issue must be treated like an emergency!!! And they have to fix it ASAP!

Purchased this truck in May of this year and OMG the damn push to start feature is ASS and the only way to drive it is to use the Auto Start took us only a day to realize this, thanks to my husband no thanks to me, LOL. Pissed that the push to start wouldn't work we called around Monday 09/29/2014 to find out if we were still under factory warranty because our truck is still under 36,000 and its year 3. Well guess what the warranty that would cover the push to start expired in June (how freaking convenient). So then we were advised to bring it in and pay $115 to have it diagnosed. Since we don't have money flowing out of our pockets I searched the internet and stumbled across this gem of a site and diagnosed the sh*t myself haha. Same issue everyone else is having. Called Dodge to open a complaint and while doing so I found out online that a recall involving this issue goes into affect Oct. 25 2014.... P54!!!!!!!!!!! HOORAY!!!! We will get this recall done first I already scheduled my appt for Sept. 27 2014 hopefully this will work. My husband and I plan to get all three recalls done at once.

Report Receipt Date: SEP 04, 2014 NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V530000 Component(s): All Products Associated with this Recall expand Details close 3 Associated Documents close Manufacturer: Chrysler Group LLC SUMMARY: Chrysler Group LLC (Chrysler) is recalling certain model year 2011 Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured January 5, 2010, to July 20, 2011, and equipped with either a 3.6L or 5.7L engine. In the affected vehicles, the fuel pump relay inside the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM-7) may fail, causing the vehicle to stall without warning. CONSEQUENCE: A vehicle stall increases the risk of a crash. REMEDY: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump relay with one external to the TIPM, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on October 24, 2014. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is P54. This is the second problem with the 2011 Dodge Durango. It started a few weeks ago in late August. First, it had trouble starting. Then, it started jerking while we were driving. Later, when the vehicle was off, I could still here the fuel pump on. Just recently, I tried starting the vehicle, but nothing would come on as if the battery was dead. The key got stuck in the ignition. I'm thinking it is either the fuel pump or the ignition switch, but why would the fuel pump stay on? I did a little research on the internet and found that the TIPM module has been known to go out. I want to take it into the dealer, but do not have the $95 diagnostic fee handy. I'm a mother of 5 barely making ends meet, yet now another expense from the Durango that I am still paying on. If it is the costly TIPM module causing issues 1 and 2, I sure hope I can join the class action lawsuit if there is one.

Durango 3.2L

My car seemed to be running fine until Thursday. It took a while to crank and I didn't think anything of it. Saturday I was stranded in a very bad area in Downtown LA leaving a club after a friends birthday party and was stranded at 2 am! I kept playing with trying to start the car until after 30 minutes it finally started and I was able to drive home. I had the family mechanic fix it (so I thought) by cleaning the throttle body and it worked perfectly for 48 hours and then all of the sudden just died on me again. I have a 3 year old and am a social worker and honestly cannot afford this inconvenience as it could be detrimental. I am in tears not knowing what to do as I do not have $1200 to fix it and of course my warranty is up. I am having surgery next week and honestly do not need this extra stress and aggravation!

I love(d) my 2011 Durango, but recently it started sputtering when started with the key. It still starts just fine when I use the remote starter, so I knew it wasn't an issue with the gas. I just received a quote from the dealership, and it looks like about a 1200.00 fix... SO ANNOYING - I don't think I will ever buy another American car. With so much in the news about GM, Chrysler, and Ford, the American car is quickly becoming synonymous with cheap failures.

Bad enough I'm having to pay monthly car payments on an unreliable vehicle.. but just yesterday while traveling on interstate 285 here in Ga., the vehicle stalled with a 18 wheeler barreling behind me... it was a very scary experience... lucky I turned on my emergency flashers and was able to pull to the shoulder of the interstate avoiding a extreme crash that may have lead to my being severely injured or possible death... being as this issue is affecting so many Durango owners across the country and the severity of possible injuries and or deaths. The manufacture should really step up and take care of this obvious defect with their product...

Have the same TIPM problem. Received recall notice 2 days after shelling out the money to fix the car since I am in the minority an have a job and need to go to work. Chrysler says mail us the original repair bills for reimbursement and guess what you have now been screwed by Chrysler. Oh... The parts not available, BS just send me my money my car is running. When you really figure out what the real fix is let me know and I will really bring the car back in to really get fixed. I can't imagine the kind of blow back coming down the road if Chrysler's fix is anything less than full reimbursement for what everyone has paid out over the last year!

Was driving home with the family and got off exit and vehicle shut off, almost rear ended another vehicle and we were almost hit. It took about 2 minutes to get it started back up. Since then, it has not stalled, but it is very difficult to start. This is the family vehicle and with the holidays coming up and a 1400 mile emergency trip up north coming up, im extremely concerned about the reliablity of the Durango. I called customer service to tell them about my issue and that i need another vehicle to go back home for the family emergency. They said they cant help and that they cant provide a rental car to everyone. I asked if she would risk her family to be hurt or even death, she was understanding but she couldnt do anything about it. I was told i could buy the part and then be reimbursed later after the recall was approved. The part and labor is around $1600 but on back order for at least 3 months. Even if i wanted to buy the part, i cant. I'm very unhappy with Dodge customer service, they would rather someone take the risk of being hurt or killed over paying for a rental car. Thank you Dodge for only caring about yourself! I will NEVER buy another Dodge!

For several weeks my 2011 durango had issues starting. Eventually the vehicle would not start after my wife had driven out of town. After finally getting to the Dodge Dealer they advised me it was the TIPM. The dealership replaced with a similar TIPM although stated this was a temporary fix and Dodge had not come out with a permanent fix.

The service adviser stated Dodge is trying to find a cheaper fix and my vehicle could fail again. He stated it is possible that the vehicle could lose power while driving but not likely.

Who would let their wife and kids drive a car with such a problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!! What am i supposed to do? Let ii sit in the driveway until a permanent fix? What a joke!

This durango has been in the shop so many times for different recalls and issues!

This is absolutely ridiculous. Chrysler knows there is a major issue with the TIPM. They made the repair to my car before they released the info on the recall. I contacted them for reimbursement on the repairs already made and they refused to pay, saying the parts are not available and they don't know what the fix will be. I was out money for rentals as well. I was stranded several times since the car would not start due to their KNOWN defect.

They need to make this right. They will lose this Customer forever if they don't. I looked for class action lawsuits and there are not any that I see for Texas.
