CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2002-2005 Explorer has a very well-established record of expensive transmission failure at under 100k miles. The Explorer has an enclosed transmission which is typically replaced with a rebuilt transmission at a cost of almost $3,000.

Adding insult to injury, the 2002-2005 Explorer also has a massive problem with the rear panel cracking. While it's a minor annoyance compared to transmission failure, ironically the crack usually goes right through the Ford logo.

I see a lot of people have this problem why is there no recall especially if you have children or grand kids you can't have them in your car in the winter they will get sick. And no you can't afford to miss work or them missing school. This is a common problem in the Explorer. I got a price for it it's $65.00 for the part but the labor is what gets you which is $95.00 an hr which I was told it takes 7hrs to fix. Smh. Who has that kind of money? Mechanics call these suvs "Explosions". It's bad enough I just had to put a engine because of the Time Changing Belt.

ONE DAY THE HEAT WAS WORKING FINE. ALL OF A SUDDEN IT STARTED BLOWING COLD. I WAS TOLD TO FLUSH OUT THE LINES IN WHICH I DID AND I HAD A LITTLE MORE HEAT. IT GETS WARM NOW IF YOU PUT THE BLOWER ON SETTING 1 BUT THE HEARDER THE BLOWER, THE COOLER IT GETS. NOW, WHERE DO I GO TO COMPLAIN TO THE DEALERSHIP. IS THERE A RECALL ON THIS. IT SHOULD BE WHEN EVERYONE SEEMS TO HAVE THE SAME ISSUE. NO MORE FORD PURCHASES OF ANYKIND FOR ME.

The blend door actuator motor went bad, as well as the gears on the door itself. Bad design by Ford, for it has such weak teeth on both the door and actuator motor.

Replaced the door and still having clicking and the heat will not stay on. If I turn the motor down to 1 or 2 my heat automatically turns to cold air. Ridiculous!

This is the second time actuator has broken. $850.00 to fix first time in 2008. When it broke again in 2013, I jury rigged it with some wire. Apparently it is a cheap 5 dollar part, with $755.00 labor cost.

We have enjoyed our Explorer until now. A vehicle should not have heating problems at 9 years old. That is a very important item. We were thinking about purchasing a new Explorer prior to this happening. We are now rethinking that purchase. We have always trusted Ford vehicles up until now. We have been told it will cost a lot to have the vents fixed and then the heat fixed. It entails taking the dash board out. What kind of problems could happen because of that? Very angry with the whole situation.

Well this was def a pain in the ass for a while, then my dad and husband took apart the entire center console to get to the bottom of the heater where the door was not closing. Whatever they did fixed it for a while and then my mom turned the knob and it went back to clicking. So my husband took it apart again and tied a heavy duty shoelace to the door and left it hanging out down by the passenger side floorboard, so now when I turn on the heater it clicks and I pull the string and the door shuts and the heater comes on!! It's awesome!! Thanks hunny for fixing my heater!! =)

loud clicking noise when attempting to turn on heat. No heat

Now no A/C. clicking noise. A/C may come on after several changes to the AC dial. AC can turn off at any time. Awful in 106 degree Baltimore weather.

Just put in $700, $400 and $300 on this truck in 2012 and now this. UGH!

The car stopped heating and blowing air properly. Within three days their was a loud ticking noise coming from under the dashboard. Took it into my trusted auto mechanic in St Louis and he knew exactly what the problem was. This was the fourth Ford Explorer he had seen with the same problem. He then told me that to fix the problem is gonna be a pain in his ass and in my wallet. It cost $1000 dollars to have this properly repaired. By ripping out the dash and removing the old actuator and replacing. I dropped the car off on a Monday morning and did not get back until Wed afternoon. Thanks Ford for your poor design, and lack of recall. Will cost Ford in the future!!!!!!

THERE WAS A CLICKING NOISE COMING FROM MY VENTS AND THE HEAT WOULD NOT COME ON OR BLOW. TOOK IT TO FORD AND THEY CHARGE $60.00 JUST TO LOOK AT THE VEHICLE AND WANTED $400.00 TO FIX. HAD IT REPAIRED AT NTB AND IT WAS $100 CHEAPER. NOT HAPPY AT ALL WITH ALL THE PROBLEMS I HAVE EXPERIENCED WITH SERVICE ISSUES I HAVE EXPERIENCED WITH FORD. PROBABLY WON'T BUY ANOTHER ONE. BOUGHT A 2005 BUICK LACROSSE (IN 2008) AND HAVE NOT HAD ONE SERVICE ISSUE. I THINK I WILL STICK WITH BUICKS FOR FUTURE VEHICLES.

The heater blows cold air. the noise sounds like it's going to blow up when you turn it on the heater. The clicking clicks with no heat and sometimes it sounds like it's clogged up and heat tries to blows out. Then the passenger window wont roll down as all of this started, on top of that the dash says that the fuel cap is not on the fuel when it is on. Then the interior seat which is the drivers seat began to get stuck and the seat panel came off as a result of beginning stuck and freezing. Interior lighting will dim in and out. I put the truck on the diagnostic machine and the Ford Lincoln said it was bad sensors and parts that should be recalled because they shouldn't be acting like that it's not natural wear and tear it's a company defect that will cost over one thousand dollars.

just want to say its a pain in the ass when you have a car payment and the you have to spend over a thousand to get something fixed. The whole purpose of buying a new car is not to have anyone elses headaches. Its not the first thing that went wrong with the car either.

My truck started making a clicking noise back in 2008 and hasn't stopped .. After about a month or two, it stopped putting out hot air in the front vents - the back vents work fine. But in the winter the driver and the passenger freeze.. If you turn the knob to the hot side it just clicks and blows out cold air... What can I do to fix this problem? I have kids and it is really cold in the winter...
