Focus SE 4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 73,615 miles

I have a 2009 Ford Focus SE with 73,615 miles on it as we speak. I moved from Northern CA to Southern CA in Jan 2011. In Feb 2011 I noticed that I was not getting as many miles to the gallon as I used to. The 09 Fords are equiped with a computer chip in the gas tank that lets the driver see how many miles to empty. It is now April 2011 and my miles per gallon is getting less and less. I took my car to Firestone Complete Auto Care to get it looked at and was told that my fuel filter could not be replaced due to it being built into the car. If I needed it replaced it would cost over 800.00 dollars due to having to switch out the entire insides of the gas tank. I am not really sure what I can do, there is for sure something wrong with the car and the fuel amount that is being calculated. Gas prices are going up and it gets very expensive to continue to keep putting fuel into my tank, although I am not filling up any more than I used to. That is what makes it so weird.

Focus SE 2.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 15,000 miles

This omission of a replaceable type fuel filter by the manufacturer can lead to serious problems with fuel injectors, regulator, and the entire fuel delivery system. The engine performance and mpg will suffer as well. Will Ford address the issue at some point and provide a recall to have a fuel filtering mechanism of some sort be installed at no cost to the owner, or will someone invent an aftermarket fuel filter kit for installation ?
