CarComplaints.com Notes: Ford changed a lot of things for its 3rd generation, just none of them were a good idea.

The transmission tends to hesitate and jerk when accelerating. The new electronically-driven power steering can fail suddenly and without warning. Even Ford's SYNC can be a headache. Actually, scratch that last one — it's always been a headache.

Focus SE 2.0L 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 145,000 miles

I have been dealing with a serious EVAP leak in my focus for 2 years now. I took it to Midas shortly after it started and paid $400, and they found that with a smoke test the purge valve by the gas tank was leaking. After a week it was having the same problem. It sat in their lot for 2 weeks and they never figured it out so I took the car back. I've had this car serviced over 9 times at the dealer for the transmission shudder so I was trying to avoid going to a dealer because they never really fix these issues with my Focus.

After 2 years I received a letter in the mail that my Focus has a recall on the computer component that tells the purge valves when to open and close. I took it to a different dealer, everything was quick and convenient. Then 3 days later my check engine light is back on and it is back to running like there is an evap leak. I called the dealer and was informed that I need to authorize a diagnostic fee if it is not a part listed on the recall.

I'm not doing this $%^& again. Just to bring it in and be told "It's operating within Ford's standards" or "We won't cover this part that's related and attached in the same system." They are putting so many loopholes in the way they handle these recalls and they literally lie to you because there is no solution. This is only second car but it's been 6 years of hell, it was only a year used and they sold it to me without repairing the first recall.

First recall addressed in Jan 2019. As they said the purge valve was working at that time, all they did was reprogram the PCM. Now it is not working correctly and my car keeps trying to stall out at a stop. Service dept telling me I have to pay for this even though I noted a second recall July 9, 2019. Also, several friends have had theirs fixed under recall. Same car and one is same year with more mileage than mine.

Focus S 2.0L

  • Automatic transmission

I have always had a problem with the jerking when getting ready to take off, and idling. In 2015 when I was getting ready to move and I was trying to trade my car in at another dealership and I went to crank up my car and it didn't start or do anything. So I had to have it towed and come to find out it was due to electrical problems.

They kept the car for about a couple of days and returned it back to me but the jerking and idling back and forth while trying to accelerate continued to happen. My brother took over the car for me and he took it to the dealership a couple of times until he became tired of having to take it to Ford and they didn't know what the issue was. My check engine light came on one day and I needed an inspection and the guy told me it had something to do with a sensor, so I ended up paying $125 for the part and let them put it on for me at Texas Auto. My vehicle passed but the very next day the light came back on.

I took it to Firestone recently and they wanted to charge me $1,770 to fix it. I thought that was kind of steep so I had paid them $99 to put it on their machine but they still didn't know exactly what was wrong with it. Advance Auto Parts referred this guy and he did a diagnostic which cost me $40 and he came back with three different things being wrong with the vehicle R&R O2 sensor upper stream, R&R Throttle Body, and the R&R Purge Valve which cost me $880 to fix.

Now, my light is back on and it's due to the latch inside of the gas tank. The problem is because it's made without a gas cap and it's going to cost me $125 for the part from the dealer and $85 for the labor. I still feel jerking while trying to accelerate to go forward and my thing was what if someone runs into the back of me because my car idle so much.

I could not afford to replace crushed fuel tank, so I just had the fuel pump replaced. So far with repairs and car rentals I am spending a fortune keeping this 2 1/2 year old car running.

So tired of Fords lies & on going issues with the 2013 Ford Focus. First the trans it still shutters, now the emission system engine light on. Take in to find out its now the emission system. While they're checking it out, I Google the issue and read it's nothing new, others have the same thing with the car. It's one thing to have one issue, but now another!

Whenever I fill up my 2013 Ford Focus at a gas station, it will have trouble starting up. Sometimes it won't crank fully. Sometimes, my car would stall. After reading other comments, the car will only get worse from here.

Focus Titanium V4

All of the sudden, my car would not start after work yesterday. The battery was fine, and it would try and try but not turn over when I tried to start the car. One time, when I hit the gas pedal just right (slightly) during the attempts, it started for a second, idled roughly for a two or three seconds, then cut back off. I had to call a tow truck and get it towed to the dealership, where fortunately I have an extended warranty. Richmond Ford confirmed the battery was fine, and after inspection they said it had to do with the fuel sensors and fuel pump; they also said they had fortunately caught the problem towards the beginning, as it was starting to rip the lining out of my fuel tank as well. This seems very similar to the other reported issues on this subject for the 2013 Focus, and I consider myself lucky that it acted up after the car was off rather than driving down the road. I have to pay a deductible and will have a rental car for the next few days per my warranty, but this would have been very expensive to repair otherwise. Someone should look into a recall for the fuel sensor/fuel pump issues that create a vacuum that tries to suck down the entire gas tank at once!

Focus

  • Automatic transmission
  • 69,000 miles

My car has about 69,000 miles on it and I bought it new. In early September this year, while making a left turn it jerked hard has though it was idling and was gonna turn off. I parked it at home for a few hours. When I went back out the check engine light came one. I took it to Duval Ford the next day (Monday) and the said that it the purge valve was the issue and something about something not bleeding up and a vacuum sensor and gave me a price of $2,700. Why is this not a recall. When I filled the tank up on that Wednesday, it would start and I had to recrank it a couple of times before it would start. I don't have $2,700 to fix a 2013 car and this is my only mode of transportation. This is something that FORD needs to own just like the transmission issue with this same vehicle line and fix it at no cost to the owner. Everytime I fill up the tank I have to crank it a couple of times before it will go. Also if I idle too long it will start rough idling and a couple of time the battery light flickers on. This is dangerous. The service guys at Duval Ford are great and I know that they are just doing their job however, I'm done with Ford. By continuing to make the Focus they are putting dollars before lives, this car needs to be recalled & replaced PERIOD. No more Fords for me, I'm done. The purge valve malfunction is a known problem in the Ford Focus but they still keep making them and NO recall has been issued, I can't say this enough. FORD HAS NOT ISSUED A RECALL, WHY?????????

Focus

  • Automatic transmission
  • 64,000 miles

My 2013 Ford Focus has started to idle rough and the check engine light came on. After taking it to the dealer for service they informed me that the canister purge valve had stuck open causing suction in the tank and resulting in the top of the fuel tank to cave in. They said that I needed to have the fuel tank, fuel pump, purge valve and canister replaced for around $2000. This is a known problem with a tsb from Ford however there is no recall so I am forced to pay the dealer to fix the problem. With such a widespread problem Ford should own up to the defect and issue a recall.

I was slowly parking the car, when it suddenly surged forward uncontrollably. It didn't come to a stop until I hit a big rock (boulder) in front of me. The car jumped the curb and a railroad tie before lodging on top of the rock. I had no control over the car whatsoever (even though I was applying the brakes).
