CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2012 Nissan Maxima is a very good reliable vehicle, continuing a stretch of good model years from 2010. Beware of Maximas from 2009, and 2004-2006 though.

The 2009 Maxima has an expensive problem where the steering lock prevents the car from starting, & costs upwards of $1,000 to fix.

Nissan Maximas from 2004-2006 have a widespread transmission defect, but judging from our complaint data, Nissan fixed the transmission problem starting with the 2007 model.

For the 2012 Maxima, so far so good!

passenger air bag turns off when there is a passenger passenger air bag turns off when there is a passenger

We have had our 2012 Nissan Maxima in the shop over 4 times for the passenger airbag light coming on while a passenger is sitting in the seat. The Nissan dealership said that they couldn't replicate the problem, therefore there is nothing wrong with the car. EVEN though I have a video and photos of the airbag light coming on!

We also were involved in an accident about 2 months after the first time we took it in for the airbag and an SUV drove into the passenger side of our car, completely shattering the back passenger window, but the side curtain airbags did not deploy. There was over $5000 worth of damage to the vehicle from this accident. I think the car has faulty air bags and is a death mobile! The lights will at times not come on whether we have to manually turn on or it's dark out and on automatic. We had to literally turn the car completely off and back on for the lights to turn back on. The center display randomly blacks out for a second and comes back on, but yet again, no issues! Nissan Corporation needs to re-purchase this car back if they cannot find out the what the problem is!! It is not safe to drive!

The light that indicates that the air bag for passenger seat is turned off illuminates when passenger is in vehicle. The problem is Intermittent. When I took it to the dealer they refused to fix it claiming they could not reproduce. I was able to reproduce it that night after getting it back from the dealer. They told me the only way they can fix it is for me to bring the vehicle in while it is happening. Since the time window between when I can reproduce the problem, have time to take it in, and the hours they are open are next to non-existent: they have basically told me they will never fix this problem. This makes me VERY upset with Nissan.

The warranty is pointless. If my wife is hurt because of this problem I will pursue every legal avenue to make Nissan pay.
