Significant gas leak from somewhere under intake manifold. Outside temp about -10C. Took it to dealer who recommended replacing gas lines with an upgrade kit - a 4 hour job requiring removal of intake manifold. They were aware that this was a common problem hence the availability of an upgrade kit. As they couldn't fix it at the time, and as the gas drip had now stopped, I put fire insurance on the car, bought a fire extinguisher, and made the one hour drive home with no further incidents.
I Googled the issue when I got home and found this site and found that this is indeed a widespread problem, obviously due to inferior quality gas lines. This is a very dangerous problem and it's only due to good luck that there hasn't been a tragedy so far.
Subaru should step up immediately and issue a recall and notify all owners of this tragedy waiting to happen. I hope that Subaru exec's, in full knowledge of this condition, would accept full moral and financial responsibility in the case of damage, injury or death.
