Significant gas leak from somewhere under intake manifold. Outside temp about -10C. Took it to dealer who recommended replacing gas lines with an upgrade kit - a 4 hour job requiring removal of intake manifold. They were aware that this was a common problem hence the availability of an upgrade kit. As they couldn't fix it at the time, and as the gas drip had now stopped, I put fire insurance on the car, bought a fire extinguisher, and made the one hour drive home with no further incidents.

I Googled the issue when I got home and found this site and found that this is indeed a widespread problem, obviously due to inferior quality gas lines. This is a very dangerous problem and it's only due to good luck that there hasn't been a tragedy so far.

Subaru should step up immediately and issue a recall and notify all owners of this tragedy waiting to happen. I hope that Subaru exec's, in full knowledge of this condition, would accept full moral and financial responsibility in the case of damage, injury or death.

I bought this vehicle used a few years ago and have put only 10,000 miles or so on it. The driven miles by me is low mainly because it is in the garage for repair all the time. Say what you will about how good Subaru is, this is undoubtedly the worst vehicle I have ever owned.

Every time I take it out something else breaks and the repairs are always super expensive. This fuel smell problem is terrible not to mention how potentially dangerous it is. Subaru has a recall on the WRX for this but not on the other models and they should before somebody gets hurt. This car is nothing but a money drain and I will never buy another Subaru ever! And that's name of that tune!
