My wife bought a 2006 Corolla LE new in 2006. Within the first year of owning it she was driving and the car just stalled in the middle of taking a corner in a high traffic area. We had it towed to a Toyota dealer and they said it was the ECU unit and changed it as a warranty item. In August 2013 the car started having a similar problem. It would stall whenever the right blinker and brake were applied at the same time. Our mechanic stated based on the diagnostic codes the ECU needed to be reflashed and said need to go to Toyota service center for it. He stated he spoke with someone who works at Toyota and they do it all the time when they get these codes. We brought it to a Toyota service center in West Covina, CA and they came back saying they needed to replace the ECU unit and cost was $787.00. I called Toyota and informed them this is the second time tis has happened since we bought the car. I never heard of having to replace the computer so often in a car that is only 7 years old. I never owned a car that needed the ECU replaced once never mind twice in less than 7 years. They opened a case and escalated it. Hopefully they will cover this since it appears more of a defect.

Corolla CE 1.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 45,000 miles

I'm driving down the road when suddenly my RPMs fluctuated and then the car just shut off on me. I was able to turn it on but that only lasted about 5 seconds with the RPM gauge surging from 2k down to 100 and back up again before the car cut off again. finally, after several of these faulty starts, the car stayed on long enough for me to drive into a parking lot..while waiting for the tow truck 2 hrs later, I decided to give it another shot...the car stayed on for about a half hour..I chalked the problem up to bad gasoline and canceled the tow-truck...bad idea...the next day about an hour into my drive the problem reoccurs. took it to my mechanic, who said he couldn't access the computer because it kept knocking his system offline. according to him it was a computer issue that only the dealership could take care of...according to the dealer, 90% of 06 corollas go through this. luckily my warranty is still active for the computer..had it not been so...FML

I was driving down the interstate when my check engine light came on and my car turned off immediately. Me and my 3yr old were in a snow storm and had to call for help. Toyota recognized this is a standard problem and would not do anything to help. They just told me that it would cost $600.00 to repair. Why was this not mentioned when I bought the car that they knew the computers were only gaurenteed until 80,000 miles then it was a high risk of failure?

(reported on)

Corolla LE 1.8L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 35,995 miles

While I was driving in traffic, the car stalled. Fortunately, I was able to pull over and restart the car. 1/10 of mile later it stalled again. Restarted the car and it drove another 10 miles or so. For then on, the car would only drive a mile and then die. I had to have it towed to the dealer. Fortunately, the car only had 35,995 (I drive a lot) on a 2006 so it was covered. I very disappointed to have been left on the side of the road by a 2006 Toyota.
