CarComplaints.com Notes: How can we give the 2001 model year a "seal of pretty good" when it has some problems with a slipping transmission and a known problem with the speed activation control switch? Because it's not the 2002. That's how.

I purchased my 2001 Ford Explorer, used, in 2009. Three months after I bought it I was trying to back out of a parking spot one day and reverse was not working. I replaced the transmission and went on bout my business. Less than a year later had to replace rear end. Just yesterday was backing out of parking spot and this time it was a loud noise and pow , no reverse. I have decided however to not replace the transmission again, but rather take what I can get on trade and hope it will get me to work and back. A recall of some sort should really be considered for these vehicles. I've spoken with so many people that have had transmission problems with this particular vehicle. If this is how Ford does business, I won't be purchasing another!
