CarComplaints.com Notes: The 2013 Nissan Altima has multiple problem trends including the CVT transmission, and now that this model is out of warranty, it earns our "Avoid Like The Plague" badge.

Owners complain about vibration and transmission failure related to the CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission), a whining noise from the power steering pump, and constant windshield problems that appear to be the result of poor design.

Be warned: the 2014 & 2015 Nissan Altima appears to share these same problems.

A few weeks ago, I was pulling out of a place of business and was unable to accelerate. In about 5 seconds, it corrected itself. That same day, I came out of work and my car would not start at all. Everything was dead. We replaced the battery. That evening and several different times since, I will be driving down the road around 20-30MPH and my car will stop accelerating. It doesn't rev up or anything, you just simply cannot accelerate. The problem corrects itself in about 5-10 seconds. Yesterday, I was driving down the highway at 60 mph and all of the sudden, I was unable to accelerate. It didn't correct itself for about 45 seconds. It is scary when this occurs when there are cars around you, especially when you are in town. I took it to a mechanic yesterday and there were a few codes returned, but only one that would make halfway sense, so they replaced the brake light sensor. Well, today as I was pulling out on to a busy road, the problem occurred again. I almost got hit by a car. I am at a loss of what to do.

Altima SV 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 62,000 miles

Not 2 years yet of ownership and my car decides to not accelerate on me. I would have to floor it to get it to finally kick in and drive until I stopped at the next light. There were no warning lights or anything letting me know of any problems. Had 2 near collisions with my family in the car trying to get my car to the dealer to have it checked out. Dealer thought it was transmission and alternator but upon warranty rep diagnosing vehicle, it was decided that it needed a new alternator. Was without my vehicle for almost 3 days but put in a rental from their dealer which wasn't any better with a constant noise while driving.
