problem #7

Century LS 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission

The cruise control has engaged by itself at least 100 times since I've owned the car. It is often very difficult to cause it to disengage. Stepping on the brake does not work. When it does happen the accelerator pedal goes quickly to the floor. Full speed. Is there a recall for this problem?

cruise control works great up to 73 mph, at 74 mph the car goes into runnaway acceleration. I got on an open road and wanted to see how fast it would go, at 75mph the pedal went to the floor and the car took off (as much as the whimpy 3.8 lter v6 could be considered taking off) I turned off the cuise control at 95 mph.

Gas gauge stopped working. Either reads full or empty, neither is accurate.

Who fixes the problem? What's the cost? The gas gauge does not work either and the back window on the passenger side will not work.

Century 3.1L

The cruise control sometimes accelerates much above the desired set point immediately after pushing the set button. Undesired acceleration may also happen at random after the speed has been successfully set. Another symptom is that sometimes the cruise will not engage at all.

I believe the problem is in the Off/On/Resume switch located in the turn signal lever. Apparently the switch contacts do not properly go into the On position, sometimes sticking in the Resume position which causes the undesired acceleration. Tapping on the switch in the direction of the Off position sometimes temporarily corrects the problem.

Century LTD 3.1L V6

Cruise control sometimes does not engage, and after pushing resume and set, etc. sometimes accelerates the vehicle uncontrollably. This morning I tried setting the cruise at 45 mph and when the cruise finally took it was in an acceleration mode with no end in sight. I was on a long straight road with no traffic so I let it go to see where it would settle out. It was still accelerating at 80 mph when I chickened out and tapped the brake. It has done this about 3 times in the last 6 months but works fine most of the time. I tried it again later this morning it worked fine. Has anyone else heard of this?
