I purchased this vehicle new. A few days after using the four wheel drive I received a "service 4WD" message. Returned the vehicle to the dealer. Dealer said they needed to update the flash. A few weeks later same warning. Returned it to the dealer and they performed the same action. Shortly thereafter the vehicle began to periodically self-engage into 4WD low when stopped (traffic signal or stop and go traffic). Returned the vehicle to the dealership a total of 9 times in the first 72,000 miles (extended warranty). Shortly after the warranty expired, the 4WD began malfunctioning again self engaging then not functioning at all. Returned to dealership and they said it would cost $125 for them to look at the vehicle but since this was a recurring problem they would take care of it for free. Dealer updated the flash again and said the problem was fixed. Less than 1 week later at a 2-way stop the problem returned. When I was stopped the vehicle put itself into 4WD low without me knowing. As I entered the intersection I realized the problem and pressed the accelerator to the floor to avoid getting hit by cross traffic. I managed to get the vehicle off the road; however, when I attempted to disengage the 4WD I was unable. After returning home in 4WD low I parked the truck and did some research. Turns out this was a pretty common problem and Chevy still doesn't have a solution. When I started the vehicle so I could take it to the dealership it somehow put the transfercase in neutral and gave me a "service 4WD" message which prevented me from selecting any drivetrain setting. After turning the vehicle off and waiting 15 minutes I started the vehicle while holding the 2H selector. It engaged into 2H and at that point I figured I had enough. I disconnected the wire harness from the transfer case actuator. I have been driving around without 4WD ever since.

I was driving home from work which is 1.5 miles, when I heard a thumping sound, and it seemed as if my rear wheels were not turning. I had a friend tow it to the dealer cox Chevrolet in bradenton, fl, and they told me, that the rear end (spider gears, and bearings) were needing replacing but are not part of the power train so it was not covered under warranty, and it would cost me $2600. I had him tow it again to a local transmission shop and they told me it was common in that year of Chevy trucks. I also needed both clutches replaced in each rear wheel, cost was well under the dealers charge. The owner of the transmission shop informed me that he has replaced a couple 100 of these and there should be a recall on them. I could have been in an accident when the wheels locked.

This is problem(s) that has been intermittent for a couple a years shortly after I purchased the vehicle but did not mention anything because it was so intermittent....first the illumination level seemed to dim every once in a while for many areas such as the gear (prnd), the speedometer, the temp control levels. Next the speedometer did not reflect correct speed sometimes even when you were parked. These symptoms were initially intermittent but now are more predominant. Now this at times is a real problem and even a safety issue.

Instrument cluster panel (shift indicator) stopped illuminating. All other items work in cluster. Its so dim you cant tell which gear your in. (there is a recall but we were told we were not covered). The entire cluster must be replaced. And you can only get the part at the dealer because they need to the VIN and mileage on the vehicle. 2. one of the main brake lines burst..yesterday 10-16-2013 while my wife was driving with my son. I am told all the lines must be replaced because they are all corroded.

The 4 wheel drive buttons fail to work every so often. I was coming home from ann arbor, mi. One night and my indicator light said I was in neutral for some reason. I played with it for a bit and no luck. My friend was with me and he owns a repair facility in South lyon, mi. He knew what was wrong! the encoder motor for the transfer case is bad. It is an electric item and fails. The encoder motor is what shifts in to 4 hi, 4 low, auto 4 wheel and 2 hi. This happened again toward the end of Feb 2010 when my truck would not shift at all, 2 hi was my only option. Another friend of mine has a 2004 Silverado and her encoder motor went bad on the freeway. Her problem was that her truck threw her into 4 low while she was at 70 mph. Omg is that safe"??" GM needs to do something before people start to crash or worse getting hurt and dyeing as a result.

I was driving my 2005 Chevrolet Silverado on the highway with the cruise control set at 65. As I approached a stretch with a lower speed limit I depressed the set/decrease button four times to slow down. The engine RPM began to decrease on the first three pushes but on the fourth push the engine immediately went to full throttle. I quickly pressed on the brake peddle with disengaged the cruise control. I drive this stretch of road almost daily and use the same routine. This is the first time this has happened. I tried to recreate the problem but the next time it worked as it should.
