In July 2001, we purchased a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado (Oklahoma package) from lawrence marshall Chevrolet. In May 2002, at approximately 20,000 miles, the air conditioner compressor shorted out the distributor cap which stopped the engine from turning over. Lawrence marshall fixed it under factory warranty at that time and considered it completely fixed. In May 2003, at approximately 40,000 miles, the same condition was fixed by lawrence marshall and because they considered it a factory defect, they fixed it for nothing. Now the same thing has happened at 60,000 miles on the same vehicle. When you turn on the air conditioner, the engine dies, but only when the air conditioner is run for a while. This vehicle is driven by my son, and I don't want him to get stranded in the middle of no where with the truck not starting. The first time this happened, it had gotten so bad that the salesman from lawrence marshall had to have the truck towed from in front of new sales to the service department at his establishment. The second time it happened, we had to have it towed from a friends house to the dealership. Now it has started happening again. Please do something to rectify the situation.

Silverado 2500 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 13,150 miles
The engine sputtered and misfired, then stalled and would not restart. Had vehicle towed to dealer. Was told that water off the A/C hose was dripping down on the distributor and had short circuited the computer. Dealer replace distributor cap and rotor. Then dealer put foam insulation over hose to keep water from dripping down into distributor. Was told by dealer that this was a common problem with all 4.3 liter engines, due to poor routing of A/C hose. G.M. needs to recall these engines and reroute A/C hose.

The engine sputtered, misfired then stalled, the dealership indicated it was due to corrosion on the distributor cap and replaced the cap and the rotor button, they also indicated it was a common problem and the corrosion was due to the air conditioner hose on top of the distributor cap which leaked water.
