There was a noise that started a few months after we bought the car used at 120,000 km but I could not figure out what it was or where it was coming from. It was only there at speeds below 50km. When I changed the transmission, I noticed that the bearings in the driveshaft were loose and not where they should be. The bearings are located in a joint at the front and one at the rear of the driveshaft. The problem was located at the front joint.
The sound was like a bunch of marbles rolling around in a metal bucket with rocks in it. There are about 6 of these bearings in this joint and they are like large marbles about 1/2" round. I took it apart and found that the metal bearing cap was full of large deep grooves from the loose marbles getting jammed inside. I repaired it by hammering out the grooved and filling the cap with some high quality grease. It's been over 4 months now since the repair and there have been no further issues.
