I just bought a transmission from the boneyard and installed it. It drives ok but reverse won't engage. Why the hell not?

I have a 1991 Geo prizm, and the other night I tried to back up and the damn thing would not back up for nothing, and what was very strange it was actually driving in reverse and in neutral. I have not ever had any problems with it in the past. Someone please help
