Failure of the front catalytic converter (bolted to engine) sends debris down exhaust system into the rear catalytic converter (mid car) causing it to clog and also fail. This is a very expensive problem that essentially "totals" the car as the cost of repair exceeds the cost of the car. When this occurs, it causes the engine to loose power (my experience, it caused my car to only accelerate to 50 MPH, then over a few months degrade to 15 MPH if at all). It also caused confusion to the family repairman who didn't understand that this car has 2 converters (he insisted it wasn't the converter since he removed the rear converter and tested car without it, not knowing their was a front converter that was clogged). This problem almost killed us once when we were almost rear-ended for not being able to maintain speed over a hill and inconvenienced me an entire summer for not being able to drive my car!
