Apparently this seems to be a common problem within the Alero family, I have many freinds with the same car and who have had the same problem. Although no recall or interest from GM head office.

Replaced the water pump myself. We have had a broken mirror bracket, leaking power steering fluid, broken power window pulley, cruise button quit working, and Heat/AC fan quit working and the car was under 4 years old

replaced water pump with mechanic.... Had a lot of coolant issues. And coincidently a lady at my work had the exact same issue with her 2000 Alero, almost in the same week. I think that GM needs to get their heads on straight and see these issues in cars....
