The contact owns a 1998 Plymouth Grand Voyager. While driving at various speeds, the horn failed to function and the air bag light remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the clock spring failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 04V480000 (air bags). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

We have checked all the fuses and found out through the my car stats web site this same problem was part of a recall involving a clock spring problem. Since no dealer in my area will honor this recall it is still broken.

The horn on the van was intermittent from nearly the first use. We rarely use it an did not remember to inquire about it over a period of several years whenever we were at the dealership for service. Finally, one time we asked about it and were told that we had a faulty sop module and that it was likely that the driver-side airbag wouldn't function. We wrote to daimler-Chrysler and they responded that they wouldn't cover the replacement. Seems ludicrous that a safety device on a new vehicle could be rendered useless and the manufacturer wouldn't step-up to replace it.

This clockspring assembly failed over a period of time, begining in about 2000 with the cruise control failure. This was followed by the airbag failure, as manifested by the airbag check lamp remaining on. Finally, the horn failed to work. I subsequently replaced the clockspring assembly this month, which repaired all the above problems. I have the defective clockspring, and am willing send it to you for analysis if you so desire.
