Noticed a ticking sound... and since there are so many of these trucks around here, the NAPA guys told me it’s the “Classic Hemi Tick”. And about three other guys in there that raised their hands, as if they have it too??

Awesome.

Had this ticking noise before while under warranty, it was on the left side and was fixed under warranty. 98,000 miles. Now its the right side. They did not tell me what was wrong under warranty, but I looked it up on internet and found out that this is a on going problem with bad manufactured valves and cam. I was surprised that, known that left side was faulty, that they did not replace right side as well ?. Now its out of warranty, at my expense !. I have own trucks before and got over 200,000 miles before I had any engine problem. Dodge is the only make I every had problems with, only 125,000 miles on engine. oil changes reg with the best oil. This should have not been a problem so early. "This is going to be an expensive fix and its not even 5 years old, I will not bye another Dodge again"

Took my truck to Goodyear mechanic and he said this (ticking) was a common problem for these engines. There is a "STAR" bulletin on it. The actual failure is that the exhaust manifold bolts will crack, you lose the seal and you can hear the ticking. Mine would happen only when cold and then quiet up when running at temperature. Since the truck is under warranty I need to take it to dealer.

Dealer agreed with the issue and verified it was under warranty. In the process of removing the manifold discovered that the bolt actually cracked the head and was now stuck in the head. Had to replace the entire head. Part was on back order for two weeks. Gave me a temporary vehicle to drive.

Since my truck made it to 77k miles I am curious what will happen at 150k. Will it crack again. If this is a big enough of a problem that heads are back order and there is a STAR bulletin I would think they would want to come up with a recall and permanent fix.

Apparently this is a common problem with this particular engine. One of the rocker arms on Cylinder 5 have blown through the rocker arm bearing and has caused this really annoying ticking sound. I am at 106,000 miles on my truck now and was told I exceeded my mileage on my warranty so I would have to pay to repair this problem.

My truck is less than 3 years old and I do a lot of highway driving as I live almost 70 miles away from where I work. I find it annoying that problems just "happen to pop up" after warranties expire. I have a buddy who had a 1999 Ford F-150 with over 300,000 miles on it and all he's had to do has been standard maintenance on his truck. I think I'm gonna switch as soon as this truck finishes falling apart on me. I used to be a Dodge guy as I've owned an Dakota, Avenger and now this Ram but the quality seems to have gone downhill.
