My Subaru Forester smells like there is a gas leak in the cabin when the weather gets cold. It is very bad, especially when the heat is on and the car is not moving. Very unhealthy and dangerous.

Forester 2.5XT Turbo

  • Automatic transmission
  • 116,000 miles

Over a year ago, I noticed gas fumes (the smell of gasoline) inside the cabin esp during the cold and damp weather. I brought the car back to the dealer, which, checked for leaks, and found none. Upon picking the car up, the problem still persisted. I called the dealer, as well as, Subaru America, Inc., to complain, and then had to bring the car back 3 times before they even acknowledged the fact that there was even the smell of gas fumes inside the car, even after the ignition was turned off-the smell continued to linger.

Well, they finally told me it had to do with some tubing or piping under the engine, and they would have to remove the turbo to get at and replace this part. Cost quoted: $1200.00. Much too costly. The whole car is worth less than $2,000.00.

I believe Subaru should be responsible for the repair because it's causing toxicity to my lungs as well as the environment. I understand there have been others with the same complaint,

The problem seems to subside during the summer months. Now, that the cool, cold, and damp weather has returned, so has the gas fumes inside the cabin. To reduce my exposure to these deadly fumes, I have to drive around with the windows open when the heat is on, even though it doesn't have to be (on).
