A common problem with many of the WRX models between '08 - '14, the shifter bushings in the transmission are very rough and sometimes make it extremely difficult to shift between gears, especially when the transmission is cold. My issue started when I originally purchased my WRX.
A quick and easy fix, however, just replace the shifter bushings with aftermarket ones. It's unfortunately not 'cheap', though not over $100 in most cases. The improvement is very noticeable though, and worth the investment.
