— Five years after the original recall, BMW has updated and amended the recall that now affects over 76,000 models of sedans, sports wagons, and SUVs. The following vehicles are included in the recall:
Model year 2006 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi, and 325xi.
Model year 2007 328i, 328xi, 335i, 335xi, 328i and 328xi.
Model year 2006-2007 525i, 525xi, 530i, 530xi, 550i, and 530xi.
Model year 2006 760i.
Model year 2006-2007 750i, 750Li, and 760Li,
Model year 2006 X5.
The original recall occurred in 2008 and was the result of a front passenger air bag seat occupancy sensor mat that could become damaged over time. The problem could cause the deactivation of the front passenger air bag.
BMW says customers should contact their BMW dealer if the air bag warning lamp and the “Passenger Air Bag Off” lamp are both illuminated. In this situation, BMW says not to use the front passenger seat and have the vehicle serviced immediately.
BMW will notify owners in January, 2014, since parts are not currently available. When parts are available in March, 2014, BMW will send a second letter and dealers will repair the occupant detection mat to eliminate the possibility that it may crack.
Additionally, owners of model year 2006-2007 3 Series with standard seats, 5 Series with comfort seats, and Z4 models will receive an extended warranty on their front passenger seat occupant detection mat.
