Rear leaf spring could break and rupture the gas tank.

— Toyota is recalling 690,000 model year 2005-2011 Tacoma 4x4 and Tacoma Pre-Runner trucks because they could catch fire from suspension problems.

That might sound like a strange possibility, but the automaker says the rear suspension leaf springs can corrode and break over time, causing the springs to move out of position. A fractured spring can contact other parts of the truck, including the gas tank. It doesn't take much of an imagination to know the spring could puncture the gas tank and cause a leak. One spark could cause much bigger problems than just a busted leaf spring.

Thankfully, Toyota says it is unaware of any accidents, injuries or deaths related to fractured springs in the Tacoma.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration hasn't released information about when the recall will begin. Further, Toyota didn't say what dealers will do to fix the problem, but owners of the 2005-2011 Tacoma 4x4 and Tacoma Pre-Runner should watch their mail.

Affected owners can contact Toyota at 800-331-4331.
