GM Recalls 383,000 Cars, SUVs and Police Pursuit Vehicles
General Motors recalls vehicles to fix windshield wiper and seat belt problems.

— General Motors is recalling more than 383,000 cars, SUVs and police vehicles in two recalls with most of the vehicles needing repairs to keep the windshield wipers wiping.

Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain Recall

GM says more than 367,800 model year 2013 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain SUVs are recalled to fix windshield wipers that can stop working when you're driving.

The first trouble reports came from Canada in December 2015 when SUV owners were complaining about failing windshield wipers during the winter. Dealers said the reported failures involved the windshield wiper’s ball joints coming loose from corrosion and separating while the wipers were activated.

In March 2016, GM opened an investigation into the wiper failures and warranty claims and found significantly higher incidents in Canada’s corrosion provinces than in the U.S. GM ordered a Canadian recall in June, but reports continued to arrive from U.S. owners about 2013 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain SUVs.

No recall date has been announced because GM hasn't figured out exactly how to best fix the problems.

Owners of affected 2013 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain SUVs may call Chevrolet at 800-222-1020 or GMC at 800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is 25302.

Chevrolet SS and Caprice Police Pursuit Recall

More than 15,400 cars and police vehicles are recalled because the seat belts may not work correctly. GM says 2014-2016 Chevrolet Caprice Police Pursuit and Chevy SS cars have driver-side seat belt tensioner cables that can get worn out and break. A busted tensioner cable will leave a driver more likely to be injured in a crash.

All the recalled Caprice police cars were manufactured May 14, 2013, through June 14, 2016, and the Chevrolet SS cars were built May 14, 2013, through April 27, 2016.

GM doesn't know when the seat belt tensioner cable recall will begin. Dealers will replace any damaged cables on the 2014-2016 Chevrolet Caprice Police Pursuit and Chevy SS cars.

For cars that don't have damaged cables, GM dealers will install new cable guides to protect the cables from wearing down. This will require new seat trim with redesigned openings for the cable routing.

Chevrolet Caprice and SS owners can contact Chevy customer service at 800-222-1020 and give them recall number 31340.
