Mercedes-Benz Recalls Cars That May Catch on Fire
Mercedes-Benz says supplier sent underbody panels at risk of overheating, melting and catching fire.

— Mercedes-Benz is recalling 800 model year 2017 E400 4Matic Coupe, E400 Convertible, E550 Coupe and E550 Convertible cars to prevent them from going up in flames from overheating underbody panels.

The underbody panel contains a recess for the catalyst on the exhaust system that might not provide enough clearance between the left catalyst and the panel. The risk of fire is due to the catalyst melting the plastic panel and setting it on fire.

In September 2016, Mercedes started investigations after hearing from assembly line employees about problems with underbody panels. The automaker discovered the supplier had delivered panels that weren't built to specification.

Mercedes engineers determined the underbody panels were not fully processed and were sent out by the supplier when the panels weren't ready for use.

The affected 2017 E400 4Matic Coupe, E400 Convertible, E550 Coupe and E550 Convertible cars were manufactured June 7, 2016, to September 8, 2016.

Mercedes-Benz owners will receive recall notices in December with instructions to get the vehicles to dealerships to have the undebody panels replaced.

Mercedes owners with questions should call customer service at 800-367-6372.
