So apparently BMW knew about this and issued a repair that most dealers did for free. My car, being a California model, never had this "issue" until I bought it in Ohio. First winter here, CCV froze over due to what BMW said, "the engine not being up to operating temp"... B.S! The car was ALWAYS garaged and warmed up accordingly in the winter as I an fanatical about it. In my case, it was complete failure at highways speed which not only hydro-locked the engine (which is not always a complete fail but still very expensive to repair), but because I was at highway speed, the pressure cracked the block.
I was lucky enough to locate a good 55,000 mile engine for $1600 then another $2300 for install. I was without my car for 2 months while it was sorted out. I love the car, don't get me wrong... BUT... This should have been a recall and repaired under warranty as, according to my dealer, it is almost a 100% failure rate if not diagnosed and replaced with cold weather part early. Now I have what is probably one of the lowest mileage 2006 X5's in the country but not with the original engine, which I will have to disclose when I sell it, and I'm out an additional $3900. NOT HAPPY!!!
