Bad injector caused hydrolock, blown engine. Car was in shop twice and no one noticed the excessive soot in tail pipe. Could of been caught.

X5 Convenience 3.0L Twin Turbo V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 51,000 miles

I bought the X5 from Carmax in Lexington, Kentucky in May. I was told the Carmax mechanics thoroughly checked the X5 and found no problems and that it was a quality vehicle. My BMW had approximately 51,000 miles when it stopped while I was driving it. The engine light came on and the car died on the highway. I was unable to steer the vehicle and it could not be re-started. I was in a very dangerous location and was almost hit by another car. I was unable to do anything about the car being stuck in the road until a tow truck arrived. The weather was extremely cold with snow piled two to three feet deep beside the highway where I stood waiting for 45 minutes. Thankfully I didn't have my 4 year old in the car with me.

The car was taken to the BMW dealership where the problem was diagnosed as a "bad computer module". It was just out of manufacturer warranty and repairs cost $2,300. I called BMW who informed me there was absolutely nothing they could do to help. BMW USA said it really wasn't their problem. I informed them of the danger I was in because of the malfunction but BMW USA did not stand behind their product at all. They did not care at all that this malfunction could have gotten someone killed. I have read about similar problems with other X5's. This should not be happening and needs to be addressed via recall or whatever means necessary before someone gets killed.
