problem #2

2009Apr 02

Silverado 4.8L

  • Manual transmission
  • 70,000 miles

My problem started with a slight plink noise when I would start from a stop, or up shift under hard acceleration. In the course of checking out the u-joints we found that the transmission fluid was black. This isn't gear oil, it's Syncromesh transmission fluid. According to the owner's manual it should be changed at 150,000 miles, mine was burnt at 70,000. We flushed and changed the fluid, it quieted down but didn't completely go away. Since then the tranny has started to make whining in 1st,2nd,and 3rd, with a load on or hard acceleration, or when downshifting.

Silverado LS 4.8L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 38,000 miles

Although the tranny does clunk every now and again while starting from a stop, it now has developed a whining gear noise. This noise is present at all speeds but is louder when off the accelerator and coasting. It also seems to have a very labored feeling during deceleration as though metal and or bearings are not being lubricated. Called the dealer set an appointment to take the truck in. I've an extended warranty we'll see if the dealer replaces the tranny or tries to squirm out somehow.
