2000 miles low oil light on.Went to dealer change engine oil.3000 miles need oil so i think maybe they forget one qt.4000 miles oil light again half qt oil needed.Went to dealer they say it normal engine is braking in.around 8000 miles more oil so on on until 100000.i change oil every 3000 miles.Now at 110000 i hear a knocking sound in engine at v4.I think it will get worst.what to do?

Just like everyone else here, I was surprised by an excessive amount of oil use between changes. Had the Low on Oil message come up and thought I had not tightened the oil nut or something. When it happened again, I knew there was a problem. once searched on Google, found out it is a very common mistake.

No fix as of yet.

I would just like to say that all of this has come as rather a surprise to me. I have had my 07 silverado for 2 years without a single issue! So, now at 28000 miles, my low oil indicator has come on, and, after topping off the oil, I browsed around and found this site. Needless to say I am now very concerned about the future of my vehicle and how much of a pain this is going to turn into.

I am happy to be armed with some background knowledge before contacting the dealer, as I'm sure I am about to get the same runaround everyone else is. I am also concerned about the "fix" that has been mentioned, shutting off the active fuel management. Without that, I would never have purchased this vehicle and my fuel costs will go through the roof... I have the Vmax 6 liter, and will be looking at around 10-12 mpg if stuck in V8 mode. groan

I have sold hundreds of Chevy trucks, suburbans and Tahoes over the last 25 Years. I am a used vehicle dealer. I drive chevy trucks. There are many issues that have close to 100 percent failure rates, but nothing compares to the oil consumption on the 2007 up trucks! The dealer will tell you it is normal to consume a quart of oil every 1000 miles! Tell that to my customer, I get sued. As should GM!. I have found a solution that is not too costly and works most of the time. Replace your left valve cover with one for a 2001 5.3 V8. The old one has an actual PCV valve. Your 2007 sucks oil right from the valve cover because it doesn't have a valve at all. This has cut the oil consumption at least in half in every case. Not a perfect solution, but cost effective.

Same thing here. At about 42K my crew cab p/u truck started to use oil. I thought it was just me. I had a 63 Riviera that I drove cross country in the 70's that used a quart the whole 6000 mile trip. This dam thing uses oil like its going out of style. I just tossed in a quart yesterday. It's ridiculous...........

I have been to dealership about the oil consumption aprox.6-7 qts between oil changes. They said they have a fix avail. around Aug. 1st. They are telling me that with the active fuel managment system when the engine goes to 4 cyl on the interstate oil is floating to top of pistons then burning off when it goes back to 8cyl. This could be because i drive the interstate alot and oil usage shows. When i pull my boat and the engine does not go into 4cyl very much i use NO oil. Is it possible they could deactivate the system short of putting new rings in the engine. This is what the fix is supposed to be. Also i changed to Mobil 1 on first oil change i notice that other people complaining are using synthetic oil also. Does this sound like they are trying to figure out what is wrong or BS. I have always owned Chevrolet and getting close to end of my war. I would hate to change brands after all these years.

2007 Chev Silverado, 28,000 miles , oil change 4,000 ago, oil low light came on,( never happened before) added 1 1/2 qts. have been told by dealer that this is an acceptable oil consumption for this truck, was told that when in the fuel saver mode that oil is sprayed up into cylinders and that the rings after time can't handle all that oil and builds up carbon on the rings, so it is sucked up past the rings and burned BUT this bulitin I got from the dealer states that this is on blocks that are aluminum with the active fuel management , so what makes the diff??? aluminum or cast iron????? Service bulitin # 10-06-01-008 dated Aug 24, 2010 Seriously considering getting rid of it. I thought that GM was a realy dependable vehicle ..........GUESS NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been adding oil to my brand new truck for over 2 years now and the problem is getting worse. At first a qrt here and there really did not bother me but now, it about 1 qt every 1000 miles. So, I took it to the dealership and found out that this is normal for this model! I was never told about this when I signed the purchase agreement and handed over my $30K check to the dealership.

Had I known now what I know now, I would have not purchased the vehicle. When you speak with your dealership, they claim GM will not cover the work since GM technical bulletin 01-06-01-011F has come out and said it is not a problem. When you call the GM Customer service hot line with a complaint, the customer service rep. will be nice and write down everything down and then do nothing with the information. The only solution for this oil consumption is to go the dealership and have them do a oil change for $100 bucks (not covered by an warranty) and then a oil consumption test is done. However, this oil consumption test really is not a test but rather should be called a oil consumption documentation step.

At this point, I'm really not sure what can be done. I've had other cars and even a diesel that never consumed as much oil (all combined) as this brand new truck. If anyone has any input, I would love to hear from them...

GOOD LUCK AND NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER GM PRODUCT, STICK WITH TOYOTA!! THE SAD THING IS THAT AS A TAXPAYER, WE GAVE GM HOW MUCH MONEY ($5 BILLION) BEFORE BANKRUPTCY AND THEN HOW MUCH AFTER THEY CAME OUT ($25 BILLION)?

Update from Mar 29, 2011: I was contacted by customer service from GM and the agent said he was going to personally look into this matter for me. However, after 6 months, and no return phone calls, nothing has been done. Looks like other consumers are having the same problem but GM does nothing but denie the situation as nothing but normal...

Update from Dec 12, 2014: Well the truck is now over 6+years old. I've been adding oil on a regular basis since this is normal per GM. However, while going to work today, the engine started to make a loud knocking sound. At which point the check engine light came on,and received other error messages. Checked the engine for oil, everything seemed to be filled. My next stop was to the dealership. They inspected the engine code errors and basically said replace the engine for$9,000 or trade it in. In a Nut shell, sounds like my camshaft and or lifters are worn beyond repair. Without any evidence, does my oil consumption have anything to do with my camshaft failure?

From day one I told everyone that the engine would be the first thing to go on this vehicle because of the oil issue. However, i was told "it normal" have no fear....

Well, if i have to trade this lemon in, YOU CAN BET IT WILL NOT BE FOR ANOTHER GM PRODUCT.

Why did the tax payers bail out GM for 30 billion dollars???

NOT HAPPY, DONT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE MYSELF AND OTHERS HAVE DONE. JUST LEARN FROM IT.

I'm in the same boat as everyone else here. My truck is averaging about 15 mpg and 2000 mpq (miles per quart). This is rediculous that GM is claiming that it's acceptable to burn a quart in 2k!? Really...? I would like to know the average amount of oil consumption... In my experience I would guess anywhere in the range of 25,000-75,000 mpq. I ran a 94 camaro for almost a decade, and don't think I burned a whole quart in 100k. I just started the oil consumption test today, but I am fearful no matter what the outcome. My truck has 48k on it, and I was planning to run it forever. I was a proud Chevy owner, begginning to feel more like a dumb redneck in denial. I am pulling for GM, but I wouldn't put my money on them. I'll keep ya'll posted.

I have a 2007 5.3 that last time the light came on it used 1 qt of oil in 1375 miles this is not going to get it.I took it to them the first time and you know what they done oil consumption test .It has done this a few times .So I called them yesterday they said to bring it up there they would put me in another truck that the parts was coming in to fix it.I heard that they have to put a left valve cover on that has this shield under it .They tried to save a dollar and left this out .The oil is getting to close to the pvc valve and is getting sucked out .They are putting new cover on and this is suppose to solve the problem .I will let you know if it does .Sounds like they need to get off of Toyota and get on gm.This normal oil consumption is bullshit I have a Toyota that has over 200000 on it don't use a drop .If this was so what the hell would you need to change the oil for just keep a 5 gallon of oil in the back and change the filter every once in a wile.What are they doing backing up in time.This is BULLCRAP

I have a 2007 WT 4X4 Silverado with the 5300 gasoline engine. The truck runs and drives great. Two times in the last six months, my driver information center has popped up with "engine oil low add engine oil". To my horror, both times I checked my dipstick and had no oil on it at all. Went to my local dealership who stated he can't touch the engine until they perform an "engine oil consumption analysis" per GM technical bulletin 01-06-01-011F. This bulletin basically states that a one quart loss of oil per 2000 miles under normal NON-TOWING driving conditions is considered normal.

I have been a loyal GM new car owner since 1979 and have owned numerous GM vehicles. I had planned on keeping this tuck until he wheels fell off of it. However, afte reading several other people with the same issues, at higher mileage, I am not so sure now. It also seems to me that the others that have stated this "oil consumption analysis" with their dealer is just getting the run around.

Has anybody out there been through this? If so, it would be interesting to see what your outcome was, especially if you exceeded the 1 quart per 2000 miles requirement. If you are over this requirement, what is the fix????? For those of you that did not exceed the requirement, what did you do??? Get rid of your truck?

I have a 2007 Silverado that I bought new. This Winter/Spring the oil light came on. I checked the oil and discovered I was 2 quarts low. My truck had about 41,000 miles on it the first time this happened. I always bring my vehicle to my GM dealer when I need an oil change. Anyway, I figured the guy who changed my oil didn't put enough back in. So, I simply brought it back to the dealer and had the oil changed again. However after about 2 months the oil light came on again. This time the dealer set me up with their "oil consumption" test. That's when I was told that according to GM its okay if my truck sucks a quart of oil every 2K. I thought are you kidding me!! I have been doing this oil consumption test for about 4 months now and its a pain in the ass going to the dealer every 2k getting the oil check. AND they won't do anything because I'm ONLY burning a quart for every 3K. I was loyal to GM but no more. I don't feel like they are taking care of me and are hanging me out to dry with this oil burner (it doesn't leak a drop - it burns it). I guess I'll dump Government Motors and next time buy a Ford.

my oil level was so low i thought someone had drained it in my driveway, or the lube shop had forgot to re-fill. didn't really trust any sensors as the wheel air sensors were

screwed as well. disappointed , in my GM truck and i'm a GM guy, as they say.

As many people have commented, my '07 silverado started "using" oil around the 58K mile marker. I use the term "using" oil b/c I don't see a puddle underneath where i park it. not sure to the ratio of consumption just know the first time I noticed it the "check engine oil" came on. There was nothing on the dipstick! I added a couple quarts and called it a day. Since the day I drove this truck ($44K sticker) off the lot I have used only Mobil1. I'm not a wealthy person but I wanted to 'invest' in something, that's why I got my silverado. A week after adding the gas station 'crap' brand oil I had my oil changed to replenish the Mobil1. the tech. where i had the work performed informed me that the truck was a quart low. Since this has been an ongoing issue.

I just wonder if there is any tie between oil consumption and GM's (gov motor) drop out valve train for the 4 Cyl. mode? Back in the day, the first time GM attempted this on the Cadillac line it was a flop.....?

I have had this vehicle in now for the 3rd time for oil low/excessive oil consumption. this is a bunch of crap that they say 1qt per 1000 miles is normal. bull!!! now on top of this crap the transmission is banging around like as if you were bumped from behind. also noticed this when dropping boat in the lake. when you try and shift from p to d it slams in to gear with an awful bang. sounds like someone is under there beating it with a hammer. have been questioned on size of boat and towing capacity as if its something i'm doing. its only a 19ft bass boat-- maybe 2000lbs tops- boat/trailer gear etc. wtf is wrong with Chevy. had 2004 f-150 not any better 4 trannies and the bastards wouldn't lemon it out. so i give Chevy a chance and this is the crap i get?? it is a shame -- no wonder everyone is buying foreign

This problem started with the engine oil level light turning on. I promptly went to tne dealership & discussed the problem with them and they stated the oil filter was loose & it was my fault as I had changed my own oil, I stated the rear main looked like it might be leaking but there is no stains in my driveway. They performed an oil change and said if it happens again bring it back. Approx. 1K miles later oil light came on again, returned to same dealer to be told your rear main is leaking, they replaced it & said that should fix it.Less than 550 miles later oil level light came on again went to another dealer hoping they might know what was happening, they stated there is a bulletin on overactive lifters another very expensive repair!!!! I was told they were positive this would fix it. !600 miles later oil level light came on again I returned to the dealer that performed the last repair to be told that per GM guidelines this would be considerd normal oil consumption!!!!!!!!! I honestly think this is a cop-out for not knowing what the problem is or avoiding the CA lemon law (3 of the same mechanical repairs in a calander year warrants replacement of the vehicle) Can anyone help???

Silverado 1500 LTZ 5.3L Flex

GM, 2007 5.3 flex fuel.... 1q of oil per 700-1000 miles, mostly highway travel. Just bought me a 5gal gas can, and filled it up with oil in case I run out... THEY SAY ITS "NORMAL" kind of like my 250cr two stroke I guess. Rather get a "RICE BURNER" than "LUB-O-HOLIC". Can I claim my $20 monthly oil expense on taxes this year since GM is public owned??????

Truck uses a qt of oil every 2300 miles. Chevrolet bulletin # 01-06-01-011F states this is NORMAL for a chevy engine. It's not excessive consumption unless it's 1qt every 2K miles or less. Truly the least expensive fix for the problem is to spec. the issue out of realistic terms. I will NEVER own a chevrolet product, nor will my friends or family if I can persuade them otherwise.
