Huge win for car owners! All TSBs to be made public. The Center for Auto Safety just made the NHTSA (US Government) make public the full text of all TSBs from now on. They are the same organization that has petitioned the NHTSA & filed lawsuits to protect car owners over exploding gas tanks & other major safety issues. Whenever you drive in your car, you are safer thanks in part to a lot of work over the years by this small but very effective consumer advocacy group.

Please take a moment & say thank you by donating $5 or whatever you can to the Center for Auto Safety.

The contact states he owns a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd pick-up. While driving he heard a popping sound from underneath the hood. The steering became almost impossible to control, and when the brakes were applied it was almost impossible to stop the vehicle. Upon inspection from a service dealer, it was determined that the shaft in the power steering pump broke. The dealer stated that the popping sound was when the shaft broke. The dealer had to replace the old power steering pump with a new and improved power steering pump. The manufacturer stated there was a recall for the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd pick-up, but the recall did not extend past the 2000 model year truck.

While driving at about 60 mph and the consumer stopped to perform a turn. After completing the turn there was a loss of brakes and power steering. The consumer was able to drive home. This happened without warning, no previous occurrences. The consumer self diagnosed the issue as with the power steering pump. The consumer took apart the power steering pump, and the driveshaft of the power steering pump was broken. The consumer felt this may be due to poor casting or undersized in design. The consumer has not replaced this at this time. The consumer contacted both the GM dealer and manufacturer. They were not willing to pay for any repairs. No repairs or corrections have been made at this time. The consumer repaired the vehicle himself.
