The problem started with fast idling (2000+), then progressed to hunting (fast then slow). I pulled off the throttle positioner connector and started the truck. It idled very slow and rough, even stalled. No surprise the engine light came on. I reconnected the TP and it continues to idle very slowly and now it runs so bad skipping and pinging that You can't drive it below 2500 rpm. It smooths right out at higher rpm. After about 10 minutes the prob. goes away completely. I replaced the cap and rotor, waste of time and money.
Any ideas?

My truck was pinging and skipping all the time under load, to the point where it would shudder and nearly shut down while driving. It was unsafe to drive. Luckily, my husband owns a NYS registered repair shop, and was able to find the solution. He replaced the intake gaskets, and the problem disappeared completely. Materials cost about $100 to fix. If you take your truck to a repair shop, it should take about 2 hours to fix the problem. Good luck to everyone else dealing with this!
