I bought the truck used in Oct. 2017 with 64,000 miles on it and have always loved it until recently. I’ve always changed the oil on time with a high quality synthetic oil. I installed new spark plugs at 100,00 miles and the engine always preformed great until one day I noticed a severe vibration coming from the motor while accelerating and it just got worse from there. My mechanic gave me the “wonderful” news, a bad lifter and a worn camshaft and then continued to make my day with a $4000.00 estimate maybe more. I took the 2nd option which is to swap the engine with a new rebuilt one which will cost more but at least I have more peace of mind knowing the motor has all new parts. My biggest complaint is Chrysler’s attitude about ignoring the problem and giving the big middle finger to owners of their products. It will be a long time before I can even afford to buy a newer vehicle so hopefully this motor will last.

Update from Oct 21, 2023: Update 10/17/2023 repair cost with rebuilt engine $9,400 the Kelly blue book value between 9 & 10 thousand dollars.It’s like I bought the truck again but I am happy with the results of the repair.

HAVE A 2010 DODGE RAM WITH 97000 MILES ON IT. COMPLETE CAMSHAFT AND LIFTER FAILURE. THIS TRUCK HAS BEEN BABIED FOR 97000 MILES. NO REASON FOR THIS KIND OF FAILURE WITH THIS ENGINE. NOTICED ON THE INTERNET I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE HAVING THIS PROBLEM. MOST DEFINITELY A CHEAP PARTS PROBLEM. THIS WILL BE THE LAST DODGE I PURCHASE.

Dodge needs to do a recall campaign on this issue. I have looked at dozens of forums and this problem is highly evident to anyone with more than 2 brain cells to rub together. For everyone that goes through the process of putting this on the web probably 100 or more don't. If not an outright recall at least acknowledge the problem and fix it when one comes in. Perhaps someone, and I am a someone, needs to look into a class action suit over this.

As I was getting up to speed on a US highway, it started shuttering and check engine light came on. I pulled over read the code and Cyl 2 Misfire. I changed the all 16 plugs and coil pack on cyl 2 . It ran fine as long as I didn't get over 2500 rpm.

Took it to local shop and they diagnosed injector on 2, so I had them replace it. After this it ran worse than before and they said it was the cam shaft. After I refused to pay the $930.00 for the injector and labor bill, they said they should have diagnosed it further and i just paid the diagnostic fee. Estimate to repair as of this morning is 3 grand. He just called and said it could be $3000 to $7000 if the valves need to be done. I agreed to the labor of $800 or so to see if there is other engine damage before I spend more than a replacement engine cost.

The very reputable mechanic said when he called the Dodge place, they automatically said this was a common issue. How can there not be more complaints of cam shaft failure and a recall done on these engines? I elected to have this shop do the repair because of their warranty. If It turned out to be more severe, I will just do the work myself.

The CEL came on blinking and binging and eventually stayed on. I had a parts store pull the code which turned out to be a P0303 (engine misfire on cylinder 3). Originally the worker said it might just be a coil pack, but consulted another worker who is also a service technician at the Dodge Dealership less than 10 miles down the road at the same dealership I bought my truck from. He looked at the screen and immediately said it will most likely be the camshaft and lifters. In talking with him more, he made it seem like this is very common for the 5.7L Hemi, (not limited to the Ram 1500), saying he has seen 100s come through the shop. I spoke with the service writer at the same dealership who was very quick to say $3200-$3300 for the repair but has only seen 5-6 with this failure a year. How could he be so quick to have a price? Something doesn't add up, (someone is being untruthful to me), especially looking at forums and other social media pages where there are lots of threads, posts, and comments.

I have messaged Dodge directly and they currently don't feel there is an issue, whether it be part quality or poor engine design.

My failure occurred at just under 118,000 miles. I have pulled the driver side valve cover and confirmed cylinder 3 intake valve has way less movement that then other valves.

I won't buy another Dodge....

It all started with a check engine light and code P0303 cylinder 3 missfire. My 2010 dodge ram started getting the missfire code any time i would get over 3000 RPM. I changed the coil still there so i changed the plugs, still there now I'm thinking fuel related. So i swapped fuel injectors and still no fix. By this time i have google searched enough site that i suspected a cam failure. My truck is now at the dealer waiting on me to ok the repairs, I was quoted $4000 for the cam and lifters and another $1925 for new heads and of course they recommend i have them done.what happened to rebuilding instead of new? I would think a worn cam would also put metal tn the connecting rod bearings, but they said nothing about that. I have learned my lesson buying a used dodge now i have a truck i am still paying on that needs major repairs.I still like the looks of my dodge but I do not trust the mechanical side of it.Dodge should do a recall on the lifters and camshaft, Search hemi problems, hemi cam, hemi missfire in cylinder # and so on. This seems to be a problem for many people.There is a recall for the car cams but was not extended to the truck. I was always a fan of chevy but decided to buy a dodge, lesson learned.I'm not saying chevy is perfect but I do feel that they would stand behind there product and fix the issue. Sometimes life lessons are not cheap I bought the cheaper truck and will have to pay the price to fix it.
