From brand new GM Canada advertised a potential 45 mpg on this vehicle (converted from metric).
I owned a 2.2 litre S 10 pickup, with manual transmission, that did better than the Terrain on mileage. I owned a 1.6 litre Nissan Sentra, with manual transmission, that did better than the S-10. The Sentra did about 33 mpg so there is no way the Terrain ever gets close to 45 mpg. The Terrain has and economy button on it for better fuel mileage but it didn't seem to make a difference. I seem to have a problem with the air conditioner staying on sometimes even after it is shut off so maybe that has something to do with the mileage too.
Just to be fair though, later on, the dealer gave me an almost brand new (2013)Terrain loaner with the same 2.4 litre engine and the cash for gas out of the wallet was the same as my 2010 Terrain. The loaner was to replace stretched timing chain and bent valves (under warranty).
Just about a year after I bought mine I heard a commercial on a Detroit radio station advertising the GMC Terrain at 26 miles to the gallon.(I live near the US border) Oops ! Cat got out of the bag! I don't believe they were referring to the 6 cylinder, but even the 26 mpg number is a bit exaggerated in my estimation. It seems that GM Canada and GM USA aren't communicating properly.
This mileage issue isn't too concerning because the buyer should always be aware that a larger engine and heavier car is not going to get better mileage compared to smaller vehicles.
GM shame on you ! Be honest with your mileage claims!
The biggest thing going for the Terrain/Equinox right now is tops in crash test results and in that they can be very honest. I have had at least 10 other problems with this vehicle discussed in other postings but I still wouldn't recommend the Terrain to anyone even with the crash test results. I have had mine for about 4 1/2 years and the resonator already split open. Bad wheel bearings, poor wipers, worn fuel pump stretched timing chain. Too many problems! I just wanted 5 years of trouble free driving! I have read where they have upgraded the engine to a new design but I feel like the guinea pig in the lab.
