This is THE most bizarre problem I have ever had with a car. I can park the car, turn it off, put the keys in my pocket and lock and/or unlock the car using the automatic door locks and the engine starts! The wheel is still locked and the automatic shifter doesn't work but the engine is running and responds to the gas pedal. The even stranger thing is to get the engine to shut off, I simply tap the brake pedal once or twice and the engine shuts back down.
It happens often enough to be a real pain but not often enough that we could ever reproduce it for the dealer who sold it to us (Friendly Ford). We bought it used in 2006 so I guess that must have been why the first owner sold it off so quickly. Other than that, its not a bad car, just has real wonky electrical issues.
I had to replace a fuse the first year we got it as neither the lighter or 12v inputs were getting any power whatsoever. That was easy enough but why on earth would a fuse go out in the first year of the car's life!?
We've now had this Santa Fe for about 7 years and will probably have it about another year and will sell it.
