The CVT transmission would make a grinding noise when coming to a stop (CVT shifting down). The issue only happened in "Drive". When put in "reverse", it wouldn't make that noise. When put in "Neutral", the noise disappeared. I researched online and everyone said it is the CVT transmission that is about to give up. There's no way to repair it. Transmission needs to be replaced.
It is a faint noise but once you notice it, you cannot not notice it again every time. I even took it to the Jeep dealership and they couldn't reproduce the issue. I sat with the mechanic and made him listen closely. He agreed with the issue and recommended transmission replacement for $4800 and that a used one! They charged me $85 to diagnose the problem that they couldn't find and I had to point it out to them. Basically I paid $85 to validate my assumptions. I traded this in for a 2012 Hyundai Elantra in November 2015.
